hoofhearted4
i partitioned my C: drive on my SSD for 40gb. its only got a couple of GB left. so im curious how do i move stuff from C: to D: safely. cutting and pasting doesnt work as there is always something "open" in another program or explorer or something so it wont copy those files. so im looking for a better, non noob way to transfer folders and stuff. i dont plan on moving anything i didnt install myself. and once i get everything moved over, ill probably do a clean install of Windows on C: just to get rid of any bloat crap thats made its way on to it. thanks all for making me a better IT! (which is what im in school for now, and am slightly ashamed i have to ask something like this as it seems so simple)
davycrockett
are you trying to move the OS to another drive or another partition on the same drive ? cos from C to D dont explain much as individuall partitions on the same HD can be labled as such . hoofhearted4
ok sorry bout the limited info. as of right now it is a 128gb ssd. 40gb C: drive and the rest of it is the D: drive, so yea, C and D are on the same drive. not trying to move the OS, just trying to move programs that were default installed on C: over to D:. programs ive installed, such as CCleaner, MSE, Raptr, etc. i do not plan on moving anything that was installed by the OS. davycrockett
simple answer there then is uninstall and use the custom install location fuction when prompted or go to computer and click "uninstall or change a program " and make your choices accordingly not all programs will let you move them using the windows method if this occurs just do it manually as stated above. oh you can resize a partition too i forget that go to start menu type in partition the disk manager will open up right click on the drive/partiton and make your choice , this got a little confusing first time round for me you will see why . hoofhearted4
yea, see, ive done that since the beginning. the programs that are in C: didnt give me that option to install somewhere else, hence they are in C: maybe ill uninstall them and look again. maybe the option is hidden, but i made sure when i got this SSD to place anything i could on D: when it installed since i only had a 40gb C: partition. davycrockett
did you select EXPRESS install or CUSTOM ?
hoofhearted4
always custom ;) well, just tested Raptr, and when opening the file it automatically installs to C:. it doesnt even have a GUI, simply installs upon execution...i know MSE doesnt give you the option because ive looked several times before. hmm. well idk what to do to free up space on my C: Drive Edited November 16, 2012 by hoofhearted4
davycrockett
pictures and other librarys ? can you move them elsewhere edit AV programs wont give you that option due to their nature Edited November 16, 2012 by davycrockett
davycrockett
did you try resizing the partition yet ? that 40gb part on C:/ can be expanded means changing the D: part too and maybe loosing some junk along the way or store it externally . hoofhearted4
i had music and downloads already mapped to D: just moved My Documents over to D: which freed up a few GB. i just wanted to move everything I installed over to D: because i heard doing a clean install of Windows every few months is a good thing. and if there were stuff on C: other then just what it installs itself, then i would have to reinstall a bunch of stuff, and i really dont wanna do that :P
