Trunk keys?

Almost all major shops have trunks/lockers/fridges/whatever that are key unlockable only, but i cannot seem to pickpocket any of them, or find any of them at their homes or by any means. The only way i can find them is by killing them, and even that doesnt always guarantee that i find it.

Is there any other way to find these trunk keys? their trunks contain all their shop goods and id love to get my hands on some of the things they carry but i dont want to kill everyone in the town to do it.

Even if i did want to kill everyone, there are inevitably the types of npcs that are unkillable and some of these are well-armed making the whole thing pointless. I know you can go in and change them to be killable but it just doesnt feel right.

Any info on this would be great, and i apologize if this was asked recently although i have gone back a few pages and did a forum search and didnt really come up with anything useful.

no i havent, ive heard about that but i dont remember where to get it. that might be worth a try i guess although like i said sometimes they dont seem to have their trunk keys on them, only their room keys, very annoying to have to keep reloading and killing them to get them without just cheating i guess.

For Oblivion, there were containers you could not access without cheats, no matter what, to prevent the player from stealing everything a shop owner had. While there may be some vendors whose keys are available (such as at least a few of the traveling merchants who have died in my game  ), there are some that I know don't have a key to a container they supposedly own.

Why not try this if you're truely stumped?

open up the game's cheat menu by pressing the ¬ button on your keyboard during game play.

Hover the mouse over the object you wish to unlock-eg: A door.

A code should appear above the door in white letters such as "Tavern Door 0000565" or "Fridge 09889668" for example. When this code is up, type in "unlock" and press ENTER.

Press the ¬ button again to come out of the cheat console.

If you did it right, the door should be unlocked.

The same thing can also be used for locked Computer Consoles, although sometimes you may have to use the word "activate" in place of "unlock".

yea id rather not cheat, i was wondering if the game had some way of opening these without requiring me to kill their shop keepers(which does work if you have enough time to kill/reload game/kill/etc until they drop it, which is almost cheating imo).

For instance in megaton moriarty has a key that he puts in a cabinet everytime he goes to bed to access the "key only" fridge or w/e in the pub, or was it a safe, i cant remember. Would be nice if you could sneak into the shop keepers room at night when they're asleep and find it in their bedside foot lockers or a desk, etc. Or just simply put these keys on the shop keeper at all times and just make them extremely hard to pick pocket without being noticed. I'd almost rather not have it on the shop keeper's body because if you fail at stealing from a container while hidden you're not going to get the guards on you.

If i was going to cheat id just give myself the items i wanted and skip the chest entirely.

I guess if there was an easier way to get the trunk keys it would be incredibly easy to steal every single shop keepers inventory and then they're essentially useless except as a stop-off to rob blind everytime their inventory resets.

Thanks all for the info, ill definitely try the mesmo when i get one.
