Deleted2725050User
I've spent way too much time studying the U3 engine, and it seems like it's the most mod-unfriendly engine ever. After asking around a lot on the epicgames UDK forums and gildor's forums, I think that the reason the .exe file doesnt check the .upks with meshes or textures in them is because it's impossible to change these without developer supported tools. (or texmod, for textures) As has been pointed out though, to be fair they never promised it. I'm just worried that it won't come for a long, long time. I kind of which that Firaxis hadn't mentioned modding if they didn't intend to support it sooner, and I'm afraid that mentioning it was only a bid to sell more of the game. I hope eventually I'll see that I was wrong. edit: revised the post as it was originally written at like 3am by a very drunken me, and was probably overly billigerent. FMod
Unreal Engine 3 is well known to be extremely unsuited to any forms of modding. This is why there are no real Mass Effect mods, for instance, or no real XCOM mods (come on, enabling second wave that was already there and tweaking settings? Compare that to TES 4 Nehrim.)XCOM 2012 is a good game, however, not necessarily much more. If you're looking for a real successor to X-COM, look here: http://www.xenonauts.com/Cheaper, too. (Not spamming, I'm not in any way related to it, but it's far closer to the original.)Or at existing open-source remakes of UFO Defense and sequels to it. You'd better clean up your post before it attracts undesired attention BTW. "Screw" is a stronger word anyway.
Deleted2725050User
Yeah, you're right, I cleaned it up to where I think it will be ok. Also, oh man I can't wait for xenonauts, should be good times.
BlackAlpha
I'm guessing it's because they are pursuing the DLC angle and are trying to maximize profits using that approach. In other words, they don't want to provide mod support. Well, they never confirmed there would be mod support. They always said "not at launch, maybe in the future". Xenonauts does look interesting, by the way. EDIT: Apperently, if you preorder it, you get access to the alpha. So I bought it, downloading now. If I don't come back here to tell you that the game sucks, it means it's really good and I'm busy playing it. :P Edited November 18, 2012 by BlackAlpha
FMod
Make sure to check out the forums, it's where most patches, build announcements, etc take place. I mostly play XCOM to get my mind off waiting for a Xeno beta - the alpha builds can't yet be played to the very end, and they crash more often than reasonable. But 17.1 is more stable. And 18 promises to have 80% of the game unlocked. V20 will probably be the beta, at which point it may be worth a complete run through.

I think the game looks great, but I'd like to hold out until its filled out enough to really dive into
FMod
Xenonauts is harder than XCOM 2012; it gets harder still as you go. So your first attempt won't be to the end anyway. So far it can't even be completed, the second half of the game is cut (locked). But it's playable, you can get a feel for how to fight, how things work, etc.
Deleted2725050User
Xenonauts is harder than XCOM 2012. Now I definately have to check this out, as XCOM has thoroughly duffed me up many a time
FMod
The difficulty curve is very different, though. You start out with a pretty good squad and very weak opponents... later in the game it becomes harder. More like a slope (easy->harder...) than the Maxwell curve of XCOM (easy->very hard->hard->OK->cakewalk). So it starts out without challenge. There are maps on the forums that can be tried for a better showcase, though. Xeno isn't meant to be beaten by "turtle" approach: there are no satellites etc, so alien invasion keeps ramping up, if you can't catch up and strike at them, there's no set death march date like Star Control 2, but it gets overwhelming with time. tsanford01
I too am killing time waiting on Xenonauts..and I hope it is closer to the XCOM i remember. This is a great game dont get me wrong, but not really what i expected. Hopefully we will even get a nexus spot for it so we can all collaborate on mods..some of use can't help but tinker/tweak stuff even if they work..
