Possible explanations that are acceptable within the game:

  1. He's an android.
  2. He's a clone.
  3. He's impervious to radiation through mutation, FEV, cybernetic enhancement, or any combination of the above.
  4. The developers are complete retards with ADD so severe they forget that they killed off the main villain.

Problems with #1:

"But he bleeds!"

Synthetic blood/lubricant. Androids must be as believable as possible.

"But he dies!"

His system is designed to react believably to situations that would kill a human, so as to maintain his disguise. Knowing you would not be able to enter the chamber to confirm his demise, he feigns death.

Problems with #2:

"How does he know [whatever stupid thing you think he shouldn't know]?"

Someone told him.

Problems with #3:

"Why would he be immune to radiation through FEV or mutation if no one else in the Enclave is?"

The only other Enclave members you meet are generic scientists, generic grunt soldiers, and the President. Since high quality FEV is severely limited, why would they waste it on the peons? And Eden sure as hell doesn't need it.

Problems with #4:

"How could anyone be that retarded?"

It's a trick, they can't.

Well played, good sir. Well played. I personally favor explanation 1 myself. There's a lot of implication that far more androids than we realize are running around. They can't all be as complicated as a certain well-minded one from Rivet City is, but Autumn isn't exactly a very deep character, me thinks.

I got another explanation...

It is not Autumn who is in that chamber at that time.

hmmm probably, but they had same coats, so there must be more guys with same coat as Autumn at the Enclave HQ, but there wasnt. Only Autumn have the coat.

This idea could be explained in that the standing Colonel was the one that got offed by the radiation, and the trippy psycho loose cannon Major Autumn gets breveted to Colonel in the aftermath. That also explains how suddenly Enclave troops are deploying EVERYWHERE after the Project Purity incident - new Commanding Officer wants to sweep the wasteland and off some people

Nope, Autumn is already Colonel before the Purity incident. Proof for that is Three Dog and the GNR radio. If you listen to it Three Dog sometimes rambles about the Enclave and how evil they are. And he also mentions Colonel Autumn in the same speech. You can hear this way before you even know about Purity, thus Autumn already has to be Colonel.

Another explanation could be that there are only two Colonels at Raven Rock, the unknown one and Autumn. After all Colonel is not the most common rank in the military.
