Better crossbow bolt penetration (visual).

What the topic says, basically. Currently crossbow bolts when hitting targets (particularly noticeable on humanoids) barely penetrate at all - it looks ridiculous when your killing blow is a bolt that gets stuck in someone's biceps by the top of it's tip, especially considering that one of the purported strengths of crossbows is the penetrating power of their shot.

While there currently is a mod that does this (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/23318) the method used (as far as I've been able to determine looking at the mod and the files) is a fairly ugly hack where the author has simply scaled up the size of the bolt model. Apart from looking grossly exaggerated (and bad, but that's just my personal opinion) this is problematic because a loaded crossbow bolt is the same as the bolt you fire, leaving the loaded one looking very out of place in the vanilla crossbows. The mod also does a plethora of other things I've no interest in, like arbitrary integration with other mods, messing with the quiver and changing the damage values of vanilla bolts.

I simply want crossbow bolts to penetrate deeper when hitting targets without any changes to the bolt mesh or anything else. I realise that it's possible changing this in a "proper" way might be hard for a variety of possible reasons (placement of projectile being hardcoded, placement being a value but buried somewhere hard to get to, complications related to how Bethesda have implemented projectiles in general and so on; I'm not familiar with these things). If it turns out it isn't hard to change I'd be happy to do it myself but I'd need someone to point me to where to do it as I've worked only minimally with the CK and not at all with any other mod tools.

Appreciate any help either way.

I agree. The vanilla looks silly. You kill the wolf, but when you go to loot the corpse, the bolt is just stuck in it's hair. Pfft. I looked at the mod you refer to, but didn't like the idea of huge fat bolts, I just want them to look like they penetrate, like the arrows do. It would be nice if it were compatible with mods that alter colors or give auras and such, but I'd pick penetrating bolts over the others if I had a choice.

I could believe it's only possible via mesh-edits.

But I agree, big fat bolts are weird.

I don't know (for sure), but I think it's possible to fix this by opening each bolt mesh, moving the projectile a bit further, and saving it, but I don't know if it affects first person view of the bolt, I'd guess not, as far as I know, first person version (the one you load onto the crossbow) uses the mesh from quiver, though I might be wrong.

Try this: 5-8-12, the higher the value the higher penetration.

Open the numbered folder and copy the meshes folder to ...Skyrim\data\

Should look like:

...Skyrim\data\meshes\dlc01\weapons\crossbow\boltprojectile.nif

...Skyrim\data\meshes\dlc01\weapons\dwarven crossbow\dwarvenboltprojectile.nif

So the loaded and the fired bolts use different meshes? That makes it a whole lot easier (the author of the linked mod must've edited both), but it seems ghosu has already done all the work for us. :)

Tried the "5" bolt - seems to be just what I was looking for. Thanks!

What do i have to change in the nif file to accomplish this?, i want to do the same thing for my daerdric and dragonbone bolts.

No problem!
Skyrim is funky in couple of ways.

When the bolt is loaded on crossbow, it uses the arrow that is on the quiver, and has bone attached to it, but when it's shot it immediately swaps to projectile.

This allows quite nice things, like bolts that "change" when shot.
It's used in couple of mods, like torch arrows, Spinning arrows etc.
