DOES THE MAIN CHARACTER TALK?

Never, as far as I know. As rabid of a fan as I am though, I admit I still haven't finished Dark Souls, so I could be wrong. I've finished many of FROM's other games though, including Demon's Souls, so I'll share what I do know.

FROM traditionally doesn't use talking protagonists. Fans speculate that it's because they want to allow the player to think of their character however they want, without the traditional trappings of an rpg defining the character in a way the player might not find as personal.

In King's Field 4 they didn't even give your character a sex or a face; you were a unisex mannequin that never spoke. I think you're supposed to feel like you *are* your character. You know how the reveal of a big secret in a game or movie is never as good as the mystery and what you had in your head? I think it's like that. Anything your character could say in Dark Souls would reduce the sense of identity with your avatar and make it feel like just a character instead of a manifestation of your persona. Instead there are simple yes/no questions, which add immersion without breaking the vibes and ambience, because you don't have to worry in that case about tone, opinion, or diction defining your avatar.

Main character does not talk in demon's souls either, and I really do appreciate their method of storytelling in this regard. Without dialogue from your character, you soon start thinking replies when prompted and your own commentary on a situation, rather than being forced into the role of someone else's creation.

This was likewise the case in most armored cores, though those were obviously a bit more linear.
