Skyrim Locking Up PC Hard Reset Required

So Ive been working on this for a couple days now with no positive results. As the title says skyrim is randomly freezing up my pc. This is not a CTD issue as I have to hard reset every time. My monitor freezes and I cannot use any Key or key combination to get out. I can try to force the game to freeze by either using a mod spell (Dance of death) or by using unrelenting force on a dragon. (weird right? doesn't work on people) I do not have any sound enhancements to that shout as others have suggested and I am 100% sure its not the mod. Other than that if I don't cast DOD spell or shout at dragons it will randomly freeze up all the same eventually while doing random tasks. However when I turn all my settings down all the way the game runs flawlessly, But I didn't spend a bunch of money on a system to run skyrim on low settings. Keep in mine my game ran fine prior to me taking a break. I will try to make a list that informs what Ive done so far.

-Disabled all mods.

-Reinstalled the game.

-Ran Windows repair.

-Rolled back GPU Drivers.

-Disabled Catalyst.

-Disabled Sound Drivers.

My drives are healthy an my ram seems fine. The more and more I do it seems to be narrowing down to my GPU The next steps I could try is using a different GPU and running the game with the same settings. Or doing a full reinstall of windows. Unfortunately neither of these options are readily available to me right away and that's why I'm here posting.

One other thing I tried was to Uninstall everything AMD (Catalyst, Card Drivers...etc) But it causing my windows to start a repair loop after post forcing me to do a system restore back to were I was with all AMD features installed again.

This could very well be my problem but it doesn't look Like ill be able to accomplish this without a fresh windows install.

Any new info is Appreciated Thanks!

-Asrock 890 GX Pro 3 Mobo

-AMD Phenom 2 T1100 6 Core Processor

-8 Gigs Gskill Sniper 1866 Ram

-MSI Radeon Lightning HD 6970

-Laser 1000W PSU

I believe your problem is your power supply. The MSI Radeon Lightning has a PSU requirement of one 75W 6-pin PCI Express® connector and one 150W 8-pin PCI Express® connector recommended. Unless the one in your post is a typo.

You do have a nice PSU, but it doesn't stop them from tanking. I have the T-shirt for that. What is happening to you sounds so terribly like what happened to me 2 months back. A power spike had torpedoed PSU, CPU (which was the same as yours) HDD and MOBO. Oddly enough I have a 6970 2Gb card too and that and the RAM were the only survivors.

If you are able, test each component individually. If you are not, get a computer guy/gal to do it. I am feeling CPU at the least here, sorry!

That sounds awful and I hope its not the case. Fortunately most my part are still under warranty.

However I have been playing Other games such as Diablo 3 without any hiccups. Wouldn't I be having problems with those games as well if it were a hardware Issue like that? I feel like D3 can be even more intensive then skyrim sometimes such as while playing with friends.

Thanks for the tips.

You would think it was OK, but mine started being fussy with Skyrim and graduated into being an ass with everything. I would get your rig given the once over while you are under warranty for the parts, and I DO really hope that I am wrong.

Ive narrowed it down and its definitely and Issue with my video Card. Went home with a 6870 from work and ran Skyrim with the exact same settings and worked flawlessly. No matter how hard I tried I could not get it to freeze.

I don't think its an issue with the card itself but rather its a incompatibility issue with the driver. I think it was caused by an update with the game or an update catalyst did. Last thing I'll try is a fresh install of windows and see is starting from a fresh slate will help. Maby a fresh install of the up to date drivers will work. If not it looks like I have to get a new card which is a shame because its a fine piece of hardware.

Ill post again with the results.

Sounds more like a hardware issue to me - the same drivers are used for both the cards you've posted and I'm certain there's not enough difference between the cards to blame this purely on software...

I'd be more inclined to blame the card here, have you checked the GPU temps while running Skyrim? - could be as simple as a badly seated cooler, lack of thermal compound or a bad fan.

You may be right, I'm just trying to exhaust as much as I can before having to actually buy a new card. The thing about this card that I like is it ran very cool. I've never seen it higher than 56c.
