I cannot assign my robot settler to any tasks

So, first, quick run-through. First, I created my robot and then assigned it to go to the red rocket station (I am going to make it a provisioner). It doesn't move to the Red Rocket station, so I take it along as a companion. I try to dismiss it, but I ran into the infamous undismissable companion bug. To resolve that (which I did in fact), I followed these steps:

  1. open console and click on Cait (or any follower you may have this problem with) and enter the following commands:
  2. setconsolescopequest followers
  3. emptyrefalias companion
  4. setplayerteammate 0

After I am able to dismiss the bot properly, I reassign him to Red Rocket. But now, I can't assign him to anything. Can anyone help me fix this one robot? All the other settlers work fine.

Worse come to worse, I guess I could just strip it of its mods and put it on a different bot.

Hiya Bruxinth.

Ok, I may have some really bad news for you. :(

Once that follower bug is in a savegame, you're not rid of it. Because it's a broken script, and those bake into your saves. That you can't assign it for anything shows that even tho it has a location, that location isn't fully assigned to it. Which, is part of the broken script.

Here's my recommendation. First, make backup copies of your savegames. Either to a different part of your hard drive, to another drive, usb stick, mini sd card, whatever you have to use.

Now, disable any and all of your mods that affect companions. Especially multiple follower mods or mods that affect their settings. Like their carry weight, ESPECIALLY unlimited Ammo or Unlimited Ammo and Power Armor (I'll get back to that one) their affinity system, stuff like that. Just mods that change their looks presets will be fine.

(Ok this is only if you have multiple followers at the time.) Dismiss them all. And save the game. Check the mod page for your multiple follower mod, and double check to see if there's anything that you need to do with that mod, before removing or disabling it!) Make sure that they are working correctly and exit.

Now, find and start up the game from a save that was from before you made the robot. Start the game, let it boot up without the mods, and then create a new save. Close the game.

Go back into your savegame folder, and since you have backups, delete all the saves in there, other than your new one you just made. There is such a thing called Savegame Bleedover. Which is where some settings can jump from one save to another. We want to get rid of that chance.

Ok now load up the game again, mods still off, and dismiss any companions that you might have. It's the dismissal part of the scripts that break. Or specifically, the part of it that sends them to another location. Which is what you'd seen previously.

Now, save the game and exit again.

When you start and load this next time, build the robot, send it to RR, and then go to RR and do the assignment. Make sure that everything is working ok, before saving the game.

Now, you can reactivate the mods, EXCEPT for Unlimited Companion Ammo, or Unlimited Companion Ammo and Unbreakable Power Armor. Either of those, you want to uninstall. Either of those, can be a leading cause for the problem script breaking. A decent replacement for it is this mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/24233

When you move your savegames back into the correct folder, make sure you DO NOT transfer over ANY of the saves that were later than after you built the robot. You don't want to risk that bleedover.

The script that we're talking about is rather fragile. I would definitely recommend to try to remember not to have any other companions active, when you recruit a new one. Or in this case, build a new companion/follower. Particularly if you have to send any previous ones to other locations.

I'm sorry that you'll lose some time on your game. I learned this, from having the follower bug hit me THREE TIMES. And back then, the only thing I knew of to fix it (especially since it was on a PS4) was to just create a new character and start all over. Because all of my previous saves had the bug baked into them too.

I hope this helps.

So basically, avoid making any of my robots followers and then they can't get the follower bug? Btw, do you have a recommendation on how to permanently destroy a robot settler (so that they cannot be revived and lower my settler count)?

Well, that would be one way of doing it. But it shouldn't have to be that drastic.

Essentially what happens is when you have a companion, and you recruit another one, you tell the previous one "see ya" and tell them what settlement to go to. And then they leave to go to it.

It is right there where the script breaks. The script tries to make them leave, but fails. And they get stuck in a limbo of not knowing where to go, so they follow you around in autopilot mode.

The best thing, is to make sure that you have gotten rid of that unlimited ammo or unlimited ammo and power armor mod. And try to avoid having somebody active as a companion/follower when you recruit another. UNLESS you're running a mod that allows you to have multiple companions and/or followers.

I'm glad that the replacement is working out much better and didn't get hit with the glitch :)

I'm looking around on the web. I haven't really used the robots hardly at all. So far, the general consensus is to either try to get them to self destruct (which is not always available thru the dialogs) or to take them out into the woods and murder them.

Which, if this one is broken as a follower, may not be an option. since you may not be able to get him to follow you. Or may end up with him bugged and stuck to you again.

Let me take a look at the DLC files. There might be something that I can work with on that.

Hey again. Ok apparently my brain is too tired for me to figure out which robots are which in that DLC.

Tho, this might help you out with the trouble child.

so that you can just outright hack him and not have to have the holotape to do it. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/18648

so that he has the same self destruct commands as regular robots. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/20755

And then this, in case that you don't have the required perks to hack robots. This is a batch file. What it is, is just a simple text file that you drop into your game folder. Not your data folder, but the same folder that your game .exe is in.

Once you've pasted that file into your game folder, start up the game

open the developer console by tapping the Tilde ~ key in the upper left corner of your keyboard.

now type in bat robot and tap your enter key, then the Tilde key again. You should now have all three robotics expert perks.

Only downside to this, is now you're stuck with 3 free perks for this character.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wXfrBAI3KjXWFYQQPzRLJPJJ1jkMzcb0/view download button looks like a downward pointing arrow in a bracket, upper right hand corner of the screen.

Ok, now...I say this to EVERYBODY. I would NOT knowingly send you any kind of harmful files. However, do NOT make it a habit to just trust anything that somebody tells you to download. Scan this with your virus scanner after you download it. It SHOULD be clean. But...ya never know!

That should help you take care of him.

Cheers!
