Old Time Player Back After Five Years & Feeling Lost

So, I''ve been out of the game for roughly five years (due to relationship break up, no Computer anymore, etc...) and so much has changed, this new SkyrimSE, this Vortex thing, etc... and I'm completely lost. Firstly it seems kinda expensive to get the old Skyrim with all it's DLC's now (had to get a new Steam Account, so lost everything), there are Mods, well one in particular, I really want, but it hasn't been updated to the new Skyrim and I don't know how... And how about this Vortex? It's doing my head in trying to delete old Mods from my old NMM, that I have somehow managed to port across in my playing around with it... And the tutorial said something about it being more challenging to install Mods not from the Nexus Site into it, that being said, would I be better off returning to the NMM or keep trying to figure this Vortex out? Plus, where the hell are my Game Files? I have a Gaming Laptop now, but its all that Apps Windows 10 set up, I can't find a damn thing on it, frustrating. All I can find is "My Games'', can't find my Steam File or Mod Files, nothing. Any other advice anyone would give me would be awesome please?

Which mod manager to use is a very personal decision. I'm old school and still use NMM. Be aware that it is now community (not Nexus) supported and is found on GitHub:

https://github.com/Nexus-Mods/Nexus-Mod-Manager/releases

There is nothing inherently wrong with Vortex or Mod Organizer of which I am aware. They offer more features at the cost of being more complex. I've read lots of reviews and you can find die hard fanatics for all mod managers.

Your game files are wherever you told them to be. The "standard" location for Skyrim IIRC is programfiles(x86)/steam/steamapps/common/skyrim.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was away from Skyrim for quite awhile as well and upon returning also felt lost. All the changes in just a couple years spoke wonders for technological advancement ...and also spoke wonders of my ignorance of it all.

However, I decided to just sit down and bite the bullet. Vortex is not as daunting as it appears. I just had to actually READ what it was about and how to work with it. I'm glad I did. I personally find it easy and practical with lots of fun bells and whistles to play with.

As far as the game itself, I decided to try SE with all the hype. However, as I started filling in my mod list I realized that many of my personal favorite mods were not available. And so, I switched back to LE. And now, a few months and 200 mods later, I am playing happily ever after. (Until I add that "one more mod" and break the system....again. Heh)

Anyway, good luck with your own quest.
