charwo
I have posted this in the New Vegas forum before, but with a dearth of answers, I need to go elsewhere. Being mostly computer illiterate, but with many mod ideas, most of which I have seen close parallels, I need to learn how to mod. But in an area this vast and with as little computer sense as I have means I need a teacher. Someone who can lock down cascade failures if that happens, someone to field my questions in the order I put them in, and teach me what is walking, what is crawling, and what is running a marathon. I cannot learn this from a reference manual; I need someone to actually teach me this stuff because I have no tolerance for failure, no means to assess why it failed, nor any real idea of what is possible, how or why. It sorta makes sense, but I can't put it together without a teacher. I have some promising ideas, but not a clue how to realize them. A teacher collaborator is what I need to bring this stuff to life. Thank you.
Valahul
I just started to mod after I began playing Fallout 3.. like a couple of weeks ago. And the way I learned stuff is by looking on how other mods work... to see what files it modified.. what scripts.. settings.. etc. And in the same principle.. you can look on how the game was made. For instance, if you want to add a 15 sneak enchantment to an armor.. you look at another armor that has that effect on it.. and you trace down what triggers it to make it work. And this can be easily done in GECK.
BlackRampage
I guess it mostly depends on exactly what kinds of mods you'd like to (be able to) make. For example: there are many who can somehow create some amazingly beautiful piece of armor completely out of custom made meshes and textures, but only barely know how to add it to the game via the GECK. Let alone how to clean their mod using Fo3Edit.
AlbinoPolarBear
Start creating small mods. Look at and modify other peoples mods. Then try doing more advanced things as you learn. I've been modding for almost a year and I'm still learning. I know how to do most stuff, but scripting is one thing I still haven't quite understood yet.You could also look up some tutorials on Youtube, or read the GECK Wiki. charwo
Well, one of the problems I have encountered as of late is that I created a hyerbreeder clone with a remesh. It worked. But now if I try to add it via console command there is no indication he pistol is added, though the command goes through. The second I try to access the items header of the pip boy, the thing crashes. Nothing about that item was altered. It loaded, now it crashes. How in the world do I go about discerning what has happened?

JkKILER
I would have to agree with AlbinoPolarBear - I always wanted to learn to mod this game after playing it first on the Xbox360. When I bought it for the PC, All i wanted to do was learn to mod. But it was a long time before I felt confident enough with the Geck/Nifskope/Gimp. Youtube, my friend, is the way I learned to do most everything i know in the Geck. As for the harder things like scripting, A youtuber, Seddon44 or something like that now makes scripting request videos. I learned from him and by simply looking at scripts from other mods, base game, Ect. Now, I feel extremely confident with progams like the Gimp and the Geck. Never got into meshing though. So my advice is, look on Youtube for something you want to do. Something small scale. Oh and if you cant add your "hyerbreeder clone with a remesh" through the console, simply put it in a box or something in the Geck. There are videos on Youtube for simple things like that too. And if you ever have a question, PM me. Ill try my best to answer them!
charwo
OK, I need to clarify this, given new experiences: Help over forums or by any form of correspondence is troubleshooting, not teaching. What I actually need is for someone willing to call me on my phone and talk me through my issues in real time. See, I need my questions field them, as I'm doing them. Answers by forum may be able to solve my specific problems, but they don't really don anything to teach me how to solve my own problems. Not that I don't appreciate the help, but I need to make progress enough that the time spent on me bears fruit.
charwo
Yeah, I'm going to need to talk to someone in real time. For me there is nothing worse than being self taught. Someone knows the answer, ergo, for me to discover it independently fill me with rage to aneurism. I need to speak to someone in real time and field my questions as they come up. I'm on the verge of giving up. If interested, send me a PM and I'll fill in the details.
