Adding an item to a single, pre-existing container

Hi!

I figured how to add an item to a world container with fo4edit, trouble is that I want to place unique items but many containers are "reused" elsewhere in the game, meaning that the items will be duplicated in other containers... So I was wondering if it was possible, with fo4edit, to place an item in a container (I wanted to place one in a dresser in your Sanctuary home bedroom) without it being cloned elsewhere? I managed to find the reference to this very particular container in fo4edit (in the "Worldspace" section I think), but there doesn't seem to a way to add an item from there...

Hiya Willdo!

Ok, from the sounds of it, the main problem that you're having is that you're trying to edit the fallout4.esm directly. Can't do that. Not allowed.

So what you have to do, is where you found the container in the left side panel, is Right click on it, select copy as override, then choose an esp file to save it to. If you don't have any other esp's selected when you launched xedit, you will only have the option to create a new esp file.

Once you have it in an esp, you then go down to where the new override is located in the left side panel, click on it there, and then you can edit it.

I haven't worked with vanilla containers, only custom ones. So I'm not entirely sure whether or not it will be filled via a level list, or by stuff being directly in it. I'm also not sure if you will need to copy the worldspace information (cell info) into your override too.

another thing to note is whether or not said container is set for respawn. That should be turned off. Tho, again, I've never messed with it, so I couldnt tell you which setting it is named, there in the file.

But this should get you started ;)

Thanks for the reply!

I forgot to mention that I already gave it a try once, the exact same way you wrote it! The item was in the Sanctuary dresser, but that same dresser was also "reused" somewhere in Natick I think. So I went there, found the dresser, and the item was also in this container... I made two screenshots of the .esp I'm trying to modify :

As you can see on the 1st pic, I added the item to the container, there's a "respawns" section, don't know if editing it to "0" will disable that, but I will give it a try!

The second pic is the worldspace reference to that very particular container, and when I said there doesn't seem to be a way to add anything there, I meant the different sections inside the red mark, everything is blank and I don't think you can add anything from here...

Hope I made myself a bit clearer, I'm not a very experienced modder, sorry if I don't use the proper words  (and english is not my native language)

Heyas Willdo, sorry for not getting back to you in time. Haven't spent much time on the nexus here the last few days. But I'm really glad to hear that you got it working out.

Also thanks much for posting that vid. I'll check that out, that might help me out later on.

Yes. That is often some of the hardest things about learning to mod. What ARE they talking about, I don't know what that is! ;D
