Stuttering, Occasional Crash, and Sub-Standard Performance

Hi everyone, I'm no expert with modding. I have tried to fix the technical difficulties I've run into myself, but I cannot seem to fix the stuttering that is taking place. The game is not running nearly as smooth as I feel it should be (even with the number of mods I have installed) and I was wondering if anyone could help. I have used LOOT to try and optimize the load order, and cleaned the files it recommended. (Though I did try playing before doing this as well, and it was the same.)

If you haven't done so yet, the first thing I'd recommend doing is going into your video card settings and set a FPS cap for the game. 80 is usually recommended. 60 is really all that you need, but the loading screens time can end up being extended for longer periods with the lower FPS settings, so 80 is a good trade off.

Also if you are having the problem when Codsworth is around, look into mods that remove that sound of his thruster. For some reason, that puts a real strain on the game.

I'd also look into mods that fix the problems this game has with precombines. I know that the Boston FPS fix is one of them.

Get rid of the high rez DLC graphics pack. They did not optimize the textures in that for gaming. If you need higher resolution graphics for your gaming pleasure there are packs here on the nexus made by people who did them so much better than the junk that beth put out in that DLC.

In that particular case, you will want to DELETE the ba2 files from your data folder, not just deactivate the mod. If you use Vortex or any other mod manager, you might want to check to see if there are virtual files for it as well.

That's easy to do, just open your windows explorer, and type the name of the ba2 archive in the search box, and then have windows search for it.

Another thing to check for is take a look in Task manager to see if there are any other apps or services that are putting a load on your CPU, Drive, or Memory while you are gaming.

But yeah, the framerate and that DLC are the first two things that will probly help you out a lot.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions! I've removed the High Res DLC pack, and replaced it with a texture pack mod. I also downloaded the Boston FPS fix. After I did this I noticed that low res textures were popping in. I managed to fix this problem by altering enblocal.ini based off of an old reddit thread. This fixed the texture problem, but there still seems to be stuttering.

The load on my CPU, Drive, and Memory are all totally reasonable while running. Now that I write this I realize I was testing this all on a new character, while Sim Settlements Conqueror was loading settlements. I'll try letting that finish before testing again.

Heyas! Yup, no problem at all.

I just thought of another one well...mod type actually, that can also cause stuttering.

If you are using any mods that create custom, randomized NPC's that were originally based off a pregen list. These are mods that create randomized looks and/or bodies for settlers, gunners, raiders, or even townsfolk (tho I personally don't know of any mods that do it for the latter, tho that doesn't mean that they aren't out there).

Those can cause stuttering, while the characters are being created.

(Unique NPCs) and will most likely do so whenever the settlements respawn or reload. As Non-Named NPC's are respawned whenever the cell they are in reloads if they are persistent actors.

I may be imagining this, it's been a pretty long day and I'm pretty tired. I could swear that I read somewhere that if you're getting twice the FPS of your monitor's refresh rate that it can cause graphics issues with the game. But take that with a grain of salt.

any mod that alter npc's and or add npc's can cause stuttering

image this, lets say diamond city, it have a decent amount npc's, now when you enter the city the game have to load all vanilla and then change all the looks from them(hair/outfit/looks)

meaning overtime for your system, means stuttering/slowdown

same for any cell that contains npc's the game have to change all the looks again, and or add npc's

it also stutter when you enter any cell that is hand changed(settlements, ect)

hell even the vannilla game stutter when changing cell's, not to mention the realy bad optimize they did on this game

in short there is not much you can do, well there is, remove/disable all mods that change/add npc's and see how that works

as for fps the game is made for 60, higher can cause trouble

for faster/better loading times you can try this mod, it works like a charm https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10283

a lil note @stormy was right the high res pack from beth is nothing then trouble, there are way better mods around for that

but wat do i know i'm just a n00b that picked up sometings

I seem to have gotten it to a manageable level. The game is looking great, and only really stutters when I sprint for long stretches. I'm guessing my problem is probably the Unique NPCs and Creatures mod then. If that's the case I will try and work around it, because I adore those mods.

I may try cutting out Unique NPCs and sticking to unique creatures. Or would this likely still cause the same problem?

Does this mod work if the game isn't installed on a SSD? That's what I am taking from the description, but I am also a complete novice at all of this! If so then it won't work for me, but either way thanks for the suggestion! I had also heard it sometimes causes low res textures to load?

And ya, I totally uninstalled the Beth texture pack and made sure steam will no longer install it, hahaha.

Thanks for all the help!

it works for both drives, it uncap the fps when loading ext/int cells, as for the low res, yes the game do that sometimes, if you encounter such thing, just save, exit game, load your save and its fixed

a well know place for doing this is near concort a quary(sp) if it load the low textures you sink into the ground to

as for your mods just try to disable 1 of the 2 unique's, and see how that work, if both mods add/change alot in 1 cell then it can help to disable 1 of the 2

Heyas. (I'm so sorry. I've tried typing out your screen name 3 times now, and all those vowels together throws my dyslexia into a tizzy!)

Glad to hear that you're making some headway on it. :)

The sprinting stutter is actually a known game issue. Believe it or not, you're actually running too fast. There's a fix for it, but it's kinda counter-productive. The whole point to sprinting is to move faster, the fix for it, slows down your sprint speed. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/29828

Speedy- Thanks for the backup, appreciated :)

I remember seeing a video about some of the glitches for FO76 that there were some areas where the texture problem that you mentioned, would let players Hide underground. Because they could do the pass-through that you were talking about.

Also with the mod that you linked to. I had forgotten about the v-sync. Thanks for the reminder, it's a new subject that I'm starting to learn about.

I had tried a different mod that does nearly the same thing. And it seemed like it did help with the loading times. That one tho the .ini file for it was version specific. So the time that I gained at the start up, was lost while the game was creating the new .ini file. :pinch:

I'll give that one a try and see how that goes :) Thanks for posting that!

Lol no worries, I'm pretty sure I mispelt the name when I made my account anyways.

The sprinting thing is ridiculous lol.

I have run into a new problem though. The game is crashing to desktop regularly. I just hit an hour on a playthrough, and I'm right by the dead brahmin south of the red rocket right near the start of the game. No errors, not not responding, the program just vanishes.

Haha, ok cool. I'm just gonna type Dio here on out ;)

The sprinting - right?? Whenever stupid stuff like that pops up, I just get a phrase that echoes around in my head.

"It just works!"

uh huh.

See? Thats what happens when you say "I finally got Bethesda game X working!". It has to go and make a liar out of you.

Ok, seriously now tho. Ok this isn't good. So that means that there's something right there that's making something screw up.

Looking at your mod list that you posted before, I don't really see anything, unless maybe it's unique creatures. It affects both the mosquitos and the brahmin. Try disabling that and use an earlier save from before you loaded that cell. Like, right after leaving the vault if you have one.

Also looking at your LO, I see these two might be backwards.

Craftable Armor Size - Fix Material Requirements.esp=1

Craftable Armor Size.esp=1

Not familiar with the mod, cuz I use armorsmith extended and UCO which both do this. But it looks like the dependent is higher in the LO than the required.

Not that it has anything to do with why you're getting the CTD right there, but thought I'd mention it.

Also, I see basement living there in your load order. Again, not the cause of your CTD right now, but I just wanna mention this. I've had a problem with that mod. Or rather, using that mod. It's really tempting to throw one of the doors down, explore it, then scrap it if you don't like it, and throw a different one down, rinse and repeat.

At least in my game, I couldn't throw down/scrap more than 3 of them. I'd end up getting infinite load screen when I'd go to leave the cell afterwards.

Had to start saving before I opened the workshop, test one or two of them, close the game, restart from my save, yada yada yada.

Dunno if that's cuz of my old laptop, my current LO build, or just a settlement glitch. Just passing that along too. Really cool mod tho!
