Enemy Scaling

While Fallout 3 doesn't suffer the dreadful scaling as vanilla Oblivion, I can't help but be reminded that the enemy does seem to get increasingly stronger and more accurate as I level up.

My question is though, can anyone explain exactly how the scaling does actually work in Fallout 3?

Cheers

Not sure what your question is. If you are asking whether the spawn list changes as player level changes, the answer is "yes." If you are asking someone to deconstruct the spawn list system to explain "exactly" how this works, you'll have to wait for someone with more time than I.

Yep, that's the one. Cheers.

Personally I've never liked it.

I like to have things that will kick my ass early in the game and then a chance to come back much later and have a role reversal :)

I think Martigen's Mutant Mod has fixed a few of my issues :)

I like the system in Fallout3. It seems to be based on 4 level bands, with 20 as it's own band.

1-4, 5-8, 9-12... and so on. But it doesn't remove the possibility of out of level encounters. It's more like a really old school D&D wandering monster list. You get mostly level appropriate enemies, but there are some fixed level encounters - you CAN fight a sentry bot, yao-gai or death claw at level 4 if you go looking for it.

IMO the system breaks down in the last two level bands, but it works pretty well till that point.

(btw I hated leveled in Oblivion too, but the stupid advancement system was at least as much to blame for that - and not a whiff of that shows up in Fallout3)

I hear what you're saying and I totally understand the D&D aspect of it.

I just prefer something like Raiders will only be between level 1-10, Ghouls 4-10, Super Mutants 5-15 and so on and so forth with the possibility of meeting those levels anywhere at any time no matter your own level. Maybe higher levels the further from civilisation (or what's left of it) you are.

I guess with only having a few types of enemy creatures in the initial release it didn't make much sense? Hopefully as time goes by and modders do their good thing something will crop up that will satisfy my need for this type of thing :)

That's why I think the system pretty much broke down completely after level 16. The wasteland went from being a somewhat interesting place where I ran into a fair variety of enemies, to being a place inhabited *solely* by deathclaws and giant radscorpions... and the occasional set of corpses from an enclave or outcast patrol :)

I'd love to see a variety of enemies, with wide power ranges, and enough variety that they could be broken down by habitat and time of day. But I'm guessing that sort of thing is probably a ways off.

Definitely give Martigen's Mutant Mod a go then. It's a step in the right direction. http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3211
