VATS Issue

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I am experiencing an issue with New Vegas and VATS after installing a bunch of mods. Whenever I go into VATS, experience something resembling screen burn in (Thats not what is though) after exiting where whatever I had targeted has its outline stuck on my screen this image stays there even after reloading a save and only disappears on closing the game and relaunching. Obviously this is super annoying and makes vats basically unusable.

Does anyone have any insight as to what could be causing this or how to fix it?

"Screen burn-in" is usually a hardware phenomenon, due to "phospher persistence". It's not normally seen outside of analog displays. I'm not a "hardware geek" who is up on whether it is something found on modern "flat panel" LED (etc.) displays, but also haven't run into the problem before and I pay attention to such issues.

What is your display? (Make and model.)

Presumably you only see this problem in FNV and it eventually "goes away" as you continue playing? If it's not hardware, then it must be from some mod. I don't see anything in that list which is an obvious VATS mod, though there are a couple I don't recognize. You may have to resort to the 'Mod Conflict Isolation' section of the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" article.

Screen burn in is just what it resembles. It goes away after closing and relaunching the game.
For example if I target an NCR soldier in VATS, once I leave VATS, I will see this outline of the soldier and any terrain that was zoomed in on in VATS on my screen. it does not go away, even after reloading the save, so essentially I can't use VATS or I have to relaunch the game every time I use it.

You are running two very large texture replacer mods and both of them have warnings about the amount of RAM they require. I have seen this before in my game and it is a result of having too much demand placed on the RAM and VRAM. I suggest you choose only one of the texture packs.

Just looked over the image on Reddit. That's a new one on me, and very interesting. As it persists through a reload of a save game but vanishes when you exit to the desktop and restart, it sounds like some of the memory used for VATS is not being completely released until the game restarts.

It's been known for a while that simply reloading a save game without exiting to the desktop doesn't completely reset all of the game memory. Things like triggered traps/mines, for instance, remain triggered/exploded until the session is closed. Suspect this is something similar. Noticed you have 6GB of VRAM, which more than at the time of the game design and might account for the "ghost memory" not needing to be reused right away. But that is pure speculation and I don't have an alternative solution for you.

You might drop a PM line to lStewie (of "lStewieAl's Tweaks") or JazzIsParis (of "JIP LN NVSE") to see if they have any idea as to a possible fix.

Let us know if you find a solution and I'll add it to the wiki.
