Lower VATS Hit Chance

Mktavish admits to sometimes posting after drinking too much. Sometimes incoherently, but often cranky. Best to just ignore such posts.

Back to YOUR problem: if you "restored to vanilla" and are running a "new game" but the problem persists, then it goes beyond simple file restoration. Either some change has gotten into your INI files (in which case you need to rename or delete them and let the Launcher rebuild them), or you need to completely re-install the game from source after renaming or deleting everything related to the game. Then start up a test game, toggle on "TGM" (god mode), find a fight and test VATS without any mods.

If you have sufficient free disk space, it is worthwhile to keep a "clean copy" of the original install around just for such testing.

Went back, uninstalled and deleted everything in the My Documents folder and the New Vegas folder in steamapps/common. Did a clean install, and ran the game once just to generate ini files. Started a new game, made a character with Strength, Agility, and Perception of 1. Also a Guns skill of 5. I don't often use VATS, but the chance to hit looks high. Or maybe this is normal? It's been a long time since I've used VATS in a play through, so maybe I'm just being dumb.

When targeting a part, the screen displays a percentage of how likely the attack will hit the targeted area based on distance from the target, visibility of the targeted body part, and combat skill.

- Source [Fallout Wiki]]

Point blank range from behind at an essentially passive target is about as easy as it gets. Notice how the "left arm" is only 28%, because all you can actually see is the hand, while the head is 42% because it is "ducked down"?

VATS only gives a 15% boost in the chance for a critical hit in V.A.T.S. mode, but weapons degrade at 4 times the regular rate.

The point of VATS is to increase the odds of accurately placing your shots; more like at a stationary "paper target".

Suspect your memory is all that is at fault here. It's a game you are supposed to enjoy with no actual shooting skill: not a simulator.

Okay I completely restored to vanilla. and the problem persists.

You say that as if it is our problem ? And obviously you did not restore to vanilla.

Are you saying they specifically wrote the game to mess with you ?

Take control of your files , stop being a putz.

Ya sorry I don't know where I was coming off with this ... except to say alcohol probably facilitated it.

(no excuse)

If you want to see some lower numbers in vats hit chance ... try this line in the console.

SetGameSetting fVATSMaxEngageDistance 10000

Which is about the average distance for default setting : uGridsToLoad = 5 .

If you have a larger number there ... you could increase it by 4000 per odd number increment.

Which makes me wonder what you could get with higher base vats setting on the base object.

Since it seems range plays a big part.

And oh ya almost forgot ... projectiles have to be set that high of a distance range also.

(if going beyond 10,000)

These are the three Geckos at the well that come running at you. I'm looking at the furthest one way. Those are really good odds to hit a target with no Gun skill, and only 1 Agility, Perception, and Strength. The second closest Gecko was 95 on all limbs. Does tat not seem to high, or is that just vanilla?
