Entire install directory erased unexpectedly

I just spent two entire days straight installing the game w/dawnguard and getting all my mods in place and compatible. I finally got everything together and all is good. I put steam into online mode so i could get an updated creation kit for the last of my tweaks..

While that was updating i went to install one last mod through NMM.. no skyrim.esm can be found.. , i checked the install folder and all the mods are gone. everything. I have no idea at all what could of caused something like that. Massively frustrated to say the least.

I was testing the game and all was good maybe minutes before this must of happened. The only thing i can thing of was going into online mode, deleting my old creation kit and then downloading it again is the culprit. But i have no idea why that would purge my install directory. Or if there is some way to get it back. Currently i ran the verify cache thing in steam and am re downloading the game..yay.

going through the remnants of the files remaining. ( 88mb worth ) , i also noticed in the script folder i have a hearthfire folder with scripts inside there now too. I've not downloaded hearthfire.

edit: Those remaining files it seems actually belong to the creation kit perhaps? If so then re installing the creation kit caused it to just wipe the folder and only keep its own files..

Rule number 1 with Steam: always update your game (that means going on-line) *before* setting up your new mods. Having said that, I fail to see how updating the game or CK has deleted your mods -- it should not happen. I've never had it happen, and never heard of it before.

This is also very bad practice: "While that was updating i went to install one last mod through NMM". Never install mods *while* the game is updating.

I would say, since it's a new installation (mod-wise), start over and do it properly.

I installed the mod while creation kit was updating, not skyrim. And I had just installed skyrim 2 days prior so i knew it was fully up to date already.

This is pure speculation and i'm not very confident in it, but one idea is that i had skyrim installed about 6 months ago. With the CK installed at that time. I'd since removed skyrim through steam but not the CK. The CK was very outdated which is why after installing the new skyrim i decided to remove the old one and install the new one. I can only assume removing the old CK and/or installing the new one caused some confusion/overlapping of sorts. It's my only guess, my install directory had everything as it should of been prior to doing this.

The word needs to be out.

The latest CK update, whether installing, updating, or perhaps "uninstalling" (according to this dude) will cause your entire Skyrim folder purged!

Recently thought of finally installing the CK and see what it was all about, and all my Skyrim files are purged along with all the mods, luckily, I do have a habit of regularly backing up mods like these, but this is disasterous if anyone out there is planning on modding.

Was also working with NPC Editor 0.75.1 while downloading..not sure if it's related, though.

Suggested courses of action:

-backup mods and wips

-separate mod packages and tools from the skyrim install directory

Just checked back on this topic, that's definately what caused it. Thanks for the response, that's crazy. I guess most people don't think to uninstall it which is why it's not a bigger problem. I only uninstalled cause i thought it needed and update and it wouldn't do it.

Funny enough i got it all going again and ready to play..then my hard drive wiped..lol. I just reformated the computer and have a total of 5 hard drives now.. backups for my backups this time. Fingers crossed lol. ( running 90+ mods right now..it takes a full day to get everything in for me, i really don't want to do it again )
