Dudeman325
Seems like I always think of something to add here just before I go to bed... Why does it seem like Lore discussions always steer away from the Meta aspect? People playing the game are trying so hard to become "immersed" into their own thing that they aren't looking at the Bigger Picture. I think if we kept ourselves detached from the Lore (as we should, since we are not the Godhead[Kirkbride, yes?], merely players on one stage [kalpa?]) we can find simple messages being told, just like we can in everything else... Maybe I answered my own question, because it stops us from being focused, but I think this world (uhh... Nirn, yeah...) is focusing too hard on too many things to see that Great Things are always happening, have always been happening, and always will happen. If we focus too much on what something is, we lose sight of what it is part of. I like to think Skyrim taught me this. Sorry if that got too Meta for anyone. UrgeNexus
Wow, this became a lot more than I was prepared to contend with. I might have to read for a while, but I'll try to add a few questions here and there, and maybe my own perspective. Great thread! Edit: Does anyone know a good source for things like this? I suppose you just have to get stuck in it. All the wiki's I've found leave a lot of stuff out, and The Imperial Library can be really confusing due to its layout, and that the Pocket Guide seems kind of dated. I'll admit I never played Morrowind much besides stealing things in the city you took the package to, and Oblivion was just generic fantasy to me (even though I see so much in it now, with new eyes, I don't really feel like playing it again), but Skyrim really got me hooked into the lore, and I feel like I'm just scratching the surface. You kind of have to just get stuck in there, yeah, there are places that make that easier though. As I mentioned earlier, the teslore subreddit is a good place to start, I've learned a ton from just lurking there and reading the various threads. In addition to questions, answers, monkeytruth and discussion, the subreddit has an FAQ and some articles on some of the major points of lore most people want to know about. Check it out, it really is a great place to learn. You'll find it at "reddit.com/r/teslore" From there you'll probably be linked to the Imperial Library or UESP, the TESWiki is usually not seen as a reliable source, due in part to it's relative youth. Something else I've learned a fair bit from is reading books in-game, I suppose that's an obvious answer, but there you go.
Lachdonin
It has admitedly been some time since i went through the material at any length (I have friends who are paranoid ab out 21/12/2012 so i've been diving into the Maya the last year or so... Guess what, there is absolutely no mention anywhere of an apocalypse) but i beleive the myth in question mentions Lorkhan's 'Fall'. There are of course 3 options when you witness or gain understanding of the Tower. Zero Sum and CHIM require actual comprehension of its meaning, but those who fail to understand it "go back to sleep" as it were. I'm sick, and i just woke up, so i lack the motivation to actually track down the myth in question right now, but if my memory is not, in fact, failing me, it would be safe to assume that any contact with the Tower changes an individuals, whether or not tehy can actually understand its meaning. Dudeman325
Oh I'm not worried about The Dragon, and no one else should be either. There's always a Dragonborn who comes around to keep him away for a little while (Edit: Sometimes he has to call on him, too), and sometimes that Dragonborn is everyone, yet no one at the same time. Its all levels of perspective. Life keeps on going as long as the Dragonborn keeps doing his thing, and that, in and of itself, is the true Reward.
