My observations of 1.8

Okay, after about 100 hours of this, I think I'm qualified to weigh in on this.

Pros:

Somewhat less bugged-out dialogue (the game no longer wrenches control of the dialogue away from the player in favor of some random NPC).

A couple obscure quest bug fixes.

Cons:

Massively unstable. The freezes WILL start to happen after 20 hours. I can guarantee it. In addition, you may also notice the usual audio and video glitches (randomly trashed audio samples, randomly trashed textures, and/or randomly trashed meshes). This bug has been present since at least Fallout 3 version 1.0. Ergo (at least as far as these bugs are concerned), this is still the same damn engine. And they still refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem, let alone attempt to fix it. Never mind the fact that I can play Morrowind and Oblivion and never once experience that random corruption.

My advice:

Play lots of characters. Play each one for ten to twenty hours and then retire them.

Where possible, avoid fast traveling or going inside and outside a lot. Never fast traveling has a downside: save game bloat. Save game bloat can also contribute to this engine's massive instability.
