Dark Souls Rage

Speaking of crappy collision/clipping detection, that reminds of the O&S boss fight. I thoroughly enjoyed how Ornstein's spear could go straight through those pillars when he did that long range thrust lunge.

i never had that happen to me (PS3) which is nice since i hid behind those pillars a lot my first few times. i use them less now, mostly to heal if need be, but yea, never had anything go through them, not even Smough's hammer attack where he charges and lifts (those seem to be the type that avoid collision and such) but yea.

I never had anything go through them either. I guess I can't know for sure since I kept my distance from the pillars, even when hiding behind them.

I never noticed this while I was playing the pc version of the game. What version did you have? (Pc, Ps3, 360?)

I didn't usually stand right next to the pillars, maybe if I had I would have gotten smited.

I'll have to remember that for New Game +

Actually, I just tested it. If you kill Ornstein first, there's no problem. However, if you kill Smough first, Ornstein turns into a giant and his spear can pierce at least 1-2 meters through the pillars.

I just picked up Dark Souls the other day but haven't played it yet. I've heard the stories of the game's difficulty but is it genuine challenge or is it the difficulty a result of trial and error gameplay and a general lack of straightforward information about where to go/what to do next? I've seen countless people playthrough Dark Souls but I am wondering once you know what to do in a given area does the game become any easier?

Also as a Dark Souls noob, what is a good build to start off with? I know going mage or thief is suicide your first time through.

90% of Dark Souls difficulty is trial and error. Once you play through the game once, its far easier the second time. As far as a noob build, just go with a pyromancer, and put the minimum points in STR and DEX to use the weapon you want, then upgrade it to lightning or fire, and pump the rest of the points in vitality, and do 40 endurance. A new player definitely wants a build with good health. I'd say 50 minimum in vitality, then 40 endurance, then the rest of the points in whatever you want.

Or aim for something like this:

The Avelyn crossbow wrecks PVE, its deceptively powerful because it shoots 3 bolts. And the large club is the highest single damage type for the least amount of stats, and pure physical is better than split damage just because of the way defense works in this game. Power within is for boss fights, or areas with a bunch of huge high HP mobs
