Freezing Due to Conflicting Mods?

Hey everyone,

I recently reinstalled skyrim and a handful of mods. Since I have started, my game has run perfectly...other than a few random freezes. Freezing/CTDs often end my play rather than my own conscious desire. This is something that I want to clear up. I am not sure if it is due to conflicting mods or not. To me it does not seem so because the freezes either happen in the open world or as I enter a new enviornment, such as opening a door to enter a house.

Here is some background information that might be helpful:

Running:

Windows 7

Skyrim 1.8 with Dawnguard DLC

SkyRe(Skyrim Script Extender) 1.6

Note: After going through my mods, I noticed some redundance between my Nexus and Steam mods. I'm guessing this could have been a source to my problem. I also noticed that some of my nexus mods are out of date. I have not updated many of them, due to laziness and the question if this is a viable concern.

1) Need to see a load order. Are you using BOSS to set your load order?

2) Using Wrye Bash to create a Bashed Patch or TES5Edit to create a merged patch? With mods that edit leveled lists (Immersive weapons, immersive armour, cloaks of skyrim, winter is coming, etc.), a merged patch is not optional.

I can post a load order if that would be helpful.

Not only would it be helpful, it's necessary. It won't necessarily provide magical insights, but without seeing your load order, there is no way anyone can tell you if this is an issue of 'conflict' between mods.

And yes, you do need to create a Bashed Patch or use TES5Edit so you can merge the conflicting leveled lists from those 'add more stuff to NPC' mods you are using.

1) Use BOSS to set your load order. If BOSS does not recognize a mod, and loads it after your Bashed Patch, that means you have to order the unrecognized esp manually (generally by checking the esp in TES5Edit to see if it's conflicting with any other mods). Do not simply let it load after the Bashed Patch.

2) Jaysus swords was made using TESVSnip, and requires an additional patch made by someone else to work nicely with the latest version of Skyrim. When you run BOSS, the BOSS log will tell you that, and the name of the patch you need to download.

3) 'Lively Inns and Taverns' is no longer supported (as stated on the mod author's page). If you are 'freezing' during cell transition, while trying to enter a tavern or inn, that''s the culprit.

1) Alright I'll get TES5Edit and do that.

2) I've installed a compatability patch for Jaysus swords, so that should no longer be a problem

3) I've haven't noticed freezing with inns and taverns as much, it could be any space or in the open world at random.

4)Thank you for all your suggestions! You've been very helpful!

If you are getting a lot of outdoor CTD and/or freezes, then the culprits are likely the mods that add more spawn points or spawns or make changes to the worldspace (as opposed to interior cells, like LIAT). Something like 'Real Wildlife' would be a mod that does that. So you might try removing those mods if the aggravation of freezes and CTDs start to outweight the benefits of those mods.

Your specs don't say if your Win7 is 32 or 64 bit. Or, the total RAM, Or, the video card.

If you are running a sys with integrated video - the video card is built into the motherboard. (most laptops also) Usually the video 'steals' ram from the system ram. If you have a lot of ram to spare this isn't usually a problem.

If you have 2 G or ram, the system will take around .3 to .5G. The video will take another .5 G or more. If you started with 2G of RAM, that leaves about 1G for the game - not enough you will crash whenever there is a big demand - like going through doors, loading screens or mods that add things like spawns.

The specs may say 2G ram, but that assumes you have more than 2G to work with, and a separate Video card with it's own built in ram.

If you have 2G of ram, a decent video card that has more than .5G (512M) of ram AND 2 G of ram, that leaves 1.5G of Ram. Sufficient for most things , but still weak for a lot of mods.

Then, to make it even more complicated. BethSoft Gambryo engine based games (oblivion, Fallout3, Skyrim) have always had poor ram management - meaning that unused ram is not properly released all of the time causing a gradual loss of the amount of ram available to the game. This leads to a crash where the screen freezes for a second or two, then crashes to desk top.

Most systems can handle at least 4G of ram - that is the max for a 32 bit system. A 64bit system can usually handle much more (except for some Win7 starter systems that are very limited.)

That's probably more than you wanted to know about ram.
