Standing in the Nightingale Temple with Brynoff (?) and Karliah. Dithering.

Probably unheard of but what if i don't take the oath? What happens? Does the questline just fizzle out? Not sure I want to be a 'guardian. Is there no way to be free of the oath?

The quest remains but you do not advance the quest and, therefore, do not get the next step in the questline (much like not returning to the Shrine of Talos in the Forsworn Conspiracy). You can leave and go back at any time and find Karliah and Brynjolf waiting for you.

For future reference, there are a lot of sites that have detailed information about Skyrim. This is my personal favorite:

Simply type in your question in the search box and you should find a lot of your own answers.

Thank you. It disappoints me that there is no way to renounce or 'cure' myself if I take this vow. Like with lycanthropy. I want to finish the Trinity Restored quest but I don't want to irrevocably ally myself with an evil daedra.

As for the console, i use it occasionally (very occasionally) and I use the UESP site all the time. I didn't know you could ask questions of it. Like "what happens if I don't take the oath?" willit answer that one?

Not directly. If you look at Trinity Restored it is likely to answer the question you posed, however.
