Below are some excerpts from my FCOM install guide.

8.1 – File Installation Hangs Up or Will Not Start

1. This is usually caused by the background application “ctfmon.exe”, and turning it off usually does the trick.

a. Press “CTRL”, “ALT”, and “Delete” all at the same time.

b. Click on “Task Manager”

c. Find the file “ctfmon.exe” and right click on the file, and select “End Process”

d. Exit the “Task Manager” window.

e. Try to install your program again.

Also make sure you have the correct version of NET Framework 2.0 (Most likely you will need to use the x86 link below)

1. OBMM requires Microsoft NET Framework 2.0 or newer to run.

a. Get the x64 version if you are running XP64bit, or Vista.

Direct quote from OBMM Help file:

“You can get it from windows update, or from the links below. Most users want x86. Only use x64 if you have a 64 bit version of windows. If you install the x64 version, make sure you tick the checkbox to install the x86 bit version alongside it, or obmm will end up running as a native 64 bit process, and some features may not work as expected.“

x86: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...dd-aab15c5e04f5

x64: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...fb-40e78d788b00

Hope this helps good luck & happy modding :thumbsup:

I'd also evaluate whether the updates are all installed correctly.

About turning off ctfmon.exe - give it a try, it might work. If you prefer an alternative to the Task Manager, security-oriented programs such as HiJackThis and others have a running tasks feature.

If the automatic updates are giving you issues, try Windows Update; you might also need a proper, up-to-date version of the installer (you can get it that way). It does unfortunately share the WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) "feature", but if you are running clean (original OS) you can live with it.

.NET is also often bundled with the installers of several HP printers (laser-based most often, but even relatively recent inkjet models feature it - it's also used by the various HP online tools). It's usually found under the "optional" updates online.

About SP3, since you're running Oblivion you should be good to go in regard to its system requirements. You might want to try that too, if that's the case.

right, im sorry but i dont really understand technology, just enough to get a game running. should i install service pack 3?

You can probably live without it, I was merely stating that you seem to have the hardware for proper support.

SP3 is supposed to deliver a series of fine-tuning adjustments and minute enhancements to the operating system (the largest improvements, in my opinion, are the firewall and wireless support), plus a ton of bugfixes, but available memory may be an issue on "cheaper" machines.

For Oblivion, XP Service Pack 2 is more than enough. Just make sure you install .NET properly as you go on to add OBMM and OBSE. Also, if you have an invasive antivirus (some releases of Norton, among things), switch the thing to a less aggressive state for the moment being; you can turn all the bells and whistles back up afterwards.

Sorry, thought the advice I provided in my first reply was clear enough.

First off, a recommendation: have a backup ready of your relevant/non-replicable data. It's always a good thing.

If you have a tech-savvy friend handy, consider getting their help/advice to perform a little clean-up, as well. Clutter sometimes gets in the way, both in the Registry and in the guise of obsolete data on your hard disk.

If you have lots of stuff installed, a good utility for degfragmenting your drive is also a good idea (there are a few nice ones, most of them faster than the standard tools).

Anyway, here goes the rundown - I'm also assuming you have a clean OS, either preinstalled or activated through a license:

1 - make sure you have all the updates marked as critical installed, if possible. While the installer was first released in 2006, I'd rather be safe than sorry. SP3 isn't necessary per se;

2 - make sure you have the correct version of Windows Installer, which is needed to properly unpack and deliver the .NET package. You need version 3.0 or above, you can download it from Windows Update or from the page featuring the .NET 2.0 framework, which is:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

Look up the words "Windows installer", select a link of your liking. If you've got 3.1 or higher you're already set, it appears.

3 - now download the installer from the labove-mentioned page. Better to have it on hand (on your disk);

4 - make sure your antivirus system isn't being too aggressive; if possibile, you should disable it or set it to a gentler setting during installation. You can enable it again afterwards;

5 - start installation.

At this point, if anything goes wrong or the install freezes, remember the advice from previous posts: open up the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del), locate ctfmon.exe, kill that process and retry.

I would not advise to use Safe Mode for the installation, though mileage may vary; you can however lighten the load on your PC by temporarily closing/exiting unneeded processes (such as Skype, Messenger or the like).
