Just background after pressing continue on main menu

When I start up my game it works normally until I press "Continue" which causes the ui for the main menu, except the mouse to dissapear. I can still move the mouse alone and Shitf+Tab in and out of Steam overlay. Don't know what caused it but before i booted up the game I updated SSE Engine Fixes from 5.1.1 to 5.2 and GDO from 2.9 to 2.10. I then reverted back to the previous versions but still the same result. I tried waiting for 20 minute but it just dosen't load which as per this subreddits definition is a Infinite load screen, except without the load screen and just the main menu.

A black screen after pressing continue (generally) indicates something is wrong with the save file. Continue presumes the last save was playable, so if there's anything wrong with it, nothing's going to happen/.

Before you "panic", try loading it again. Infrequently, the game just glitches during loads. If it doesn't, then try another save.

Meant no disrespect with the "panic" comment. It was really more tongue-in-cheek.

Anyway, then all I can think of is to enable debugging and check a report of the game load. Something's obviously crashing. Maybe a bum mod (ie an LE mod or a mod that doesn't play well with others)

Hmm... Never encountered anything quite so nasty. Have you checked the integrity of the game using Bethesda's game checker? (I'll admit I don't know what it's called, but I see people talking about it, apparently something you can run from Steam?)

This has worked for some people:

  1. Close Steam (right click on the system tray icon and choose exit)
  2. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)or wherever your steam folder is installed
  3. Go to Steam/steamapps/common/skyrim/Skyrim
  4. Delete (or move to desktop to avoid issues if it does not work) the SkyrimPrefs.ini file
  5. Open Steam and go to : Library > Skyrim > Right Click > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game cache
  6. It should download the missing file, and hopefully allow you to play.

EDIT: You might actually want to skip ahead and try step 5 first before moving or deleting any files.

If the problem isn't due to incompatible/broken mods or corrupted files and no offered solution works, the only thing I can think of is that either your file path related to your mod organizer is incorrect, or maybe you have a separate program that deals with memory allocation that Skyrim doesn't agree with somehow.

Anyway, good luck to you. If worst comes to worst, I suppose you might have to delete everything and re-download the game files; I hope it doesn't come to that.
