getting new laptop, help with requirements?

First of all, hp sucks!

They are terrible, I have heard from relatives and friends and friends of friends about their computer problems and those that have hp laptops have similar issues. Their laptops get too hot and stop working in less than an hour or the lights and indicators flash slowly but no video on the screen and can't use the laptop. Crap hinges that break easily or suddenly just by opening the laptop, power jacks that break very easily and are difficult to repair.

Get a toshiba, they are just a little bit more and last a long time. Their power jacks on the inside are using a plug that goes to the motherboard they are not directly soldered in so when your kids or dog whatever steps on the power cord it won't yank out and damage the motherboard. When that happens with a toshiba you can still use it just that power jack will be floating around on the inside a bit but you can still plug into it and it will work:-)

Their keyboards are the only problem, don't get their models that have the apple looking keyboard because for some strange reason, any keyboard that looks like an apple laptop keyboard even if it is on another brand laptop cost $60 or more online but the cheapo looking laptop keyboards are $10 or less with shipping. You will spill something on that keyboard sooner or later or your kids, dog whatever will do it because they don't really care it is not their laptop.

Second of all, hp sucks! No really they are cheap cheapy cheapo! Look at the complaints filed against them in the last six or seven years, all for bad products usually laptops. HP ceo have changed a lot over the last ten years and even the current ceo screwed up recently buying a bad company that is costing hp a lot of money in legal fees and loss of profits in the country where that other company is located. They absolutely don't care about quality of product and never will since thinking like that gets in the way of shutting up share holders according to them anyway.

Toshiba has far fewer problems and a better track record, dell is a lot like hp but a bit more devious selling known bad replacement parts as quality working parts. The hinges on some dell laptops are junk more specifically the mounts for the hinges because they are really thin plastic mounts that are part of the bottom of the laptop case on the inside and they snap off real easy leaving only some cheap plastic button assembly to hold the screen to the laptop. I have seen this several times in the last two years with dell. Their desktops like to show you orange blinking lights and refuse to work after a short time too.

You could also go with fujitsu or panasonic if the models you find are really made in japan but other than that you will find a toshiba more commonly in most parts of the world.

Any laptop with a high end video card is gonna drain the battery fast and overheat if you use it on anything else besides the kitchen table, you can get one of those laptop coolers with two or more big fans on it but get the cooler with long legs so when you try to use it on a bed it won't suffocate from the bed cover. I have encountered people that leave their laptops running on shag carpet, really thick bed covers and other materials they should never use a laptop on and none of them could understand why the laptop overheated and stopped working. Somehow none of them managed to burn down their house with their bad laptop behavior yet though.

That's a little bluntly put :P but yeah I suppose you do make a point when HP's quality isn't that great; I did own a HP desktop and it malfunctioned after a while, in which the computer literally restarts by itself because the circuits "overloaded". After all, money does matter when it comes to quality. But I've heard toshiba's got some mixed reviews too; some said that their laptops' disk drives fail to open or their functions of some parts don't work. Not to mention, you can't even pick graphics card; I just took a look at customizing and the only option was "AMD or Intel integrated graphics card", which according to the requirements in UESP, it won't even work Oblivion; the highest graphics card they have won't even work Skyrim beyond Medium-Low. Don't get me wrong, Toshiba's laptops are better and it'd be great, but I've yet to decide.

I changed my mind, I don't want to worry about cooling down my laptop, but I do want it to at least run Skyrim (I'll deal with cooling it down later), as it seems to be a factor in deciding this predicament :I

I really appreciate you guys giving me some laptop brands worth checking, but I think I'll stick with my original question. Can and will these HP laptops' specs run Skyrim? A simple yes or no will work. I don't think recommending me brands really will help me out here, as I've done research and a lot of brands use terrible cards or are too expensive (remember, I'm a student! I don't have a job!

Allright ill say Yes they should work on low settings!!

In my opinion Skyrim is not that demanding on low graphics (maybe medium with a little tweaking).

Its shameful to say but Hp laptops are mostly build out of cheap materials (Even their overpriced Alienware) so think of it , on the long term you will be using a lot of money buying new ones.

last i really think you should buy a cooler stand, Many dont know this but it makes a tremendous difference when your notebook heats up GOOD LUCK WITH IT

Yeah it will run skyrim fine, maybe even on high with AA and AF set to off and low shadow quality and a few tweaks. Your FPS will likely dip into the low 20s at times but by and large you should be over 30 which is playable enough.

I don't know why people always settle for less. If you want to purchase a laptop, get something that will actually run the damn game how its meant to be- something that will be WORTH YOUR MONEY. You will enjoy the investment 10x more than settling for something sub-par.

I'm sure you have a job? Work hard for the next two months (flies by in no time) and buy yourself this laptop MSI GT70 0ND-444US.

Brand new ivybridge cpu. The older 670 compared to this newly released 675 gpu is incredible, enormous boost in performance. 2 gigs of vram for all of your modding pleasure (which the 675 will do a pretty damn good job of running). There is no SSD, but there are 2 ports for HDDs, meaning one is open. Purchase a cheap 80gig SSD for your OS and Skyrim and YOU ARE SET. MSI makes amazing laptops.

(ive been building computers for 10 years)

Edit: You are a student and don't have a job. Heard that one before. I graduated in May, but I had a job all throughout the entirety. *shrugs*

Yeah, you're right, I'll walk to the nearest starbucks and tell them I need the cash and job to pay for an high powered luxury as well as a game. I'm sure the employer's willing to fork over an apron because that's a new reason to wanting a job nowadays right?

Besides the point, how do I know this company (and all others suggested) I've never heard of is even reliable or even true? You can say it's made out of entirely out of gold but that wouldn't prove anything, or even if that the parts were handcrafted with painstaking work by a man, not machine. Believe me, I have had a guy who made his own computers with the highest quality parts and know what happened? The thing caught on fire. Don't explain to me that it was because it was shoddily made, because he too had an experience in building computers and worked a profit in building computers. If you ask me, it really sounds like you guys are working as representatives for these companies and advertising them, same way that Dell or HP is doing, and are really trying to get a hold of some customers by suggesting one over the other. I don't believe in running the game by beauty standards, where it must be like an artwork, I believe in running it in practical standards in one can at least enjoy it without having the headache of being unable to afford a unnecessary luxury. Haven't you ever heard of gameplay, not graphics? But you're right, everyone in the world who wants to or dream of playing Skyrim at home should get something in the 2000-5000 dollar range and get it especially from these unknown companies where their reputation is unheard of until now.

All in all, I'm only hearing at this point is mainly sales pitches. I think I'm better off with this crippled laptop I'm using than one with bells and whistles. I can care less now about any games for that matter. Back to playing DOS games.
