Adipose
I've finally decided to try a character run outside the main quest, starting with avoiding the Thane at Whiterun, slipping in and recruiting a follower other than Lydia, and then doing all the side quests, etc. How awkward is this going to be in the long run? I already suppose that I'll need to go after the head dragon at some point.
Dmz96
Well you wouldn't be able to shout or run into dragons until you slay the dragon @ the western watch tower. You also won't have the good old fus ro dah until after the greybeards. I went to that point and haven't done anything else for the main quest as I've already done it 7 times in the past few months xD

The rest of the game is in play then, so if you want to do the Companions questline you can without feeling as if you are supposed to be saving the world. Rooker75
You should take a look at the Live Another Life mod, which makes it a lot easier and more immersive to do this. It is really well done. As long as you stay out of Dragonsreach, you never have to bother with the main quest. Just be prepared to die horribly several times right at the beginning if you pick the Necromancer start. ^^
