Planning to purchase Morrowind for the first time.

Hello everyone,

I am planning to purchase Morrowind. I am curious about this game because I see a lot of people has good memories on this game.

I am quite new to Elder Scrolls games. My fist experience with Elder Scrolls game was Oblivion, but I didn't finish play it because I played it on my friend's PC years ago (My PC was not qualified to play it back then). Skyrim is the first Elder Scroll series that I personally own and play fully.

My intention to purchase Morrowind is I want to know the storyline and quests that makes a lot of people like it. Now, the problem is, the graphic of that game is not as interesting as Skyrim/ Oblivion. Also, some people said that the combat use some kind of dice roll system or something (I don't know what they call it, but it makes even if you shoot the arrow on the enemy accurately using the crosshair, there will still a chance that it will miss) is it true?

I also heard there's a mod called Morroblivion. It said that the mod will make you play Morrowind with Oblivion game engine. Is it recommended? Or should I just purchase Morrowind from steam and use mods that increase the game's graphic quality and change the combat system?

To everyone who has a lot of experience in Morrowind, perhaps you can give me some advice?

Moving to Morrowind from Skyrim might be quite a culture shock to you but congratulations on taking up the challenge.

Graphics - meh. A game this good is way more than it's graphics. Though I'm sure someone will come along and give you a link to MSGO eventually. As for the combat, yes, it was built around the old dice throw. Which means everything is calculated off screen and at lower levels, you can aim as carefully as you like but you're unlikely to hit your target at first. Believe it or not this happens in Skyrim as well, it's just that in Mw it's a lot more obvious for various reasons. Once you've gotten a few more levels of experience in game, more of your attacks will hit.

Morroblivion can't be discussed here. Go do a google search.

Good luck

Well, I guess I have to adapt several things when I play the game.

I think I've made up my mind. I'll purchase Morrowind : GoTY Edition.

I understand that it is recommended to play the game in vanilla first. But I'm planning to use several mods that increase the graphic only. Perhaps this MGSO is recommended? Any risk playing the game with that?

Only suggestion I can give you (I also play and mod Skyrim) is to get Morrowind on Disc. Don't get it from Steam as a lot of mods just don't seem to like it when you do.

I have both and believe me Steam can be a pain.

I have both the disc GOTY version and the Steam version. The only difference is that the Steam version doesn't come with the Construction Set. You can get the missing files here on Nexus, however. Runs just fine.

Good advice for either version is to install outside of your Program Files folder (C:Games/Steam for example). Some mods, or mod utilities like MGE or Wrye Mash have problems with Windows UAC feature. Installing outside Program Files will prevent a lot of headaches.

Good place to find links for utilities, bugifixes and mod info / advice here: Mod Recommendations for New Players

Hope you enjoy it :)

You might want to check out this one-on-one-on-one comparison of features in Oblivion, Morrowind, and Skyrim. It makes a great deal clear.

If you're running from a PC, you should be able to install mods, and some are pretty important: the Morrowind Code Patch both deals with corruption issues affecting adding and removing mods, as well as quite a few fixes, and adds a lot of user configuration choices. Also, the Unofficial Morrowind Patch fixes a ton of bugs that got past Bethsoft.

Finally, the big deal about combat is that Oblivion and Skyrim are FPS-like in that you can't miss in combat, and neither can your opponent. Morrowind uses a D&D-flavored die roll, based on a few factors, of which the most important is Agility/Dexterity. So if you have a a high skill in a given weapon by low agility, you'll be like the person who intellectually knows what to do with a sword, but never swung it.

Best of luck. It's a great game. :)

yes get it. I would recomend getting the morrowind overhaul graphocs mod that nasically installs itself. Im using steam version of morrowind and have it texture modded all to hell as well as some other mods to. Basically saying that so far I havent had any problems with modding or running in the file where steam places it.

One major thing in morrowimd os that its charecter skill>player skill. U are just a director guiding the chqrector along but its up to the actual charecter and theor skills if things succeed or not.

  • 4 weeks later...

I also came from Skyrim to MW, and at first used 0 mods. That takes a bit of getting used to. Recommendations for new players:

The Morrowind Graphics & Sound Overhaul

Morrowind Code Patch (which is included in the overhaul if you choose to use it)

Possibly a simple magicka regen mod, as it gets annoying to regen magicka in towns if you can't rest.

As for skills...

Make a custom class, and pick a weapon skill (I recommend at least 1, and a melee one at that) as a major skill. And go beat up on random mobs til you get to 45+ in that skill, so that you hit on a more reliable basis. Other good class skills are Alteration and Mysticism. Alteration lets you open locks, levitate, travel faster, and is just all around useful. Mysticism is also good due to the travel spells (which you will be using, so might as well make it a class skill), and Telekinesis, which is a must if you plan on stealing stuff.

And don't try to mix armor types, I did on my first couple of characters, and it was a waste of a skill.

The unofficial Elder scrolls pages has lots of useful information regarding the skill and leveling system, and advice for new players.

And congrats, this game is awesome once you get used to the differences from Skyrim. I haven't played Oblivion, but I don't really feel I need to having played MW, and Skryim for a more "streamlined" TES game.

And it is possible to beat anything at any level if you have enough understanding of the game, but avoid taking on tough enemies (like guards, or daedra) early on. You will get spanked. Often.
