Thinking about buying Steam - Disk makes crazy sounds

Ok, so I've been really thinking about installing the steam version of Oblivion the thing is though I already have a lot of things on my computer from modding etc.

I rather not use the disk anymore because it seems to slow my computer down, and makes whirring sounds whenever I go through files on the disk.

My computer needs some serious spring cleaning so I think now might be the best time for it.

Can anyone give me some tips for making the transition and clearing my old Oblivion disk files?

First and foremost, do NOT install Steam inside the protected 'Program Files' folder structure. Install it to somewhere like C:\Games\Steam\. Then all of your Steam games will be found at:

C:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\

Use a mod manager. In order of features, and therefore usefulness:

  1. Wrye Bash - (BAIN format -- learn it, convert mod packages to it -- you will not regret it)
  2. Oblivion Mod Manager Extended (OMOD format)
  3. Nexus Mod Manager (not all mods that have 'Download with NMM' buttons will install with this, that's why I list it after OBMM Ex)

Would I be able to just copy and paste my data folder into the new steam folder?

The answer to that is yes... and no. Let me clarify: some simple mods will work just fine like that, but complicated installation mods (DarN UI, FCOM, OOO, DR, MMM, etc.) will not. You would do well to install each mod properly, from scratch, using a mod manager as previously advised.
