Vampires

People who complain about this game ripping off books and movies really need to play the other Fallout games (especially FO2) to understand that this is a constant theme in the Fallout franchise. In FO2 you run into a whale and a flowerpot in the desert, and they are ripped off directly from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series (I think they were in the second book).

The other Fallout games also had people "telepathically" turn against the PC without objective reasons. It is a downside to the whole faction concept as implemented in these kinds of games.

The Family is in the Meresti Trainyards. You can get there by going through the service tunnel from Northwest Seneca Station (which you get marked on your map by Evan King in Arefu) or overland. There are Mirelurks in the tunnel, and a very hood chance of a random encounter going overland, so come loaded for bear.

Thematically speaking they have far too many features of vampires not to be mistaken for them, no matter what Vance concedes to outsiders (you got to admit he's a bit of a smooth talker.) They avoid the sunlight, they drink blood, they have a clan heirarchy, and some suggestion of mind control/domination. Even Vance has the dark charm of the archetype.

The whole situation just strikes me as a quest they had laying around after Oblivion and they tried to force it into Fallout. And they could've done that a bit better; one of the recurring themes of Fallout was to expose the potentially damaging nature of the guru-child relationship that cults engender, but here it's shown as a happy and harmless commune, and the guru is made a sympathetic character.

"Do you think I can turn into a bat and fly away? no, I can't. Does my image project in a mirror? of course it does." - Vance.

The family are not vampires, they are cannibles who drink blood instead of eat flesh. done and simple. In fact they are not even emo , the only emo charactar in the game is Bittercup and even then shes not actually an emo, more of a goth (Annoys me when people get "goth" and "emo" mixed up.). The only "mystic" sort of person in The Family is Vance and thats only because he is a smooth talker and has a sort of charm about him... and a sword that catches fire...

Anyway, am I the only person here who actually liked the family? seriously? no one else liked it at all? jeez. Personally I think it's a nice twist in the game and adds some more stuff than "here is a wastland, here are some mutants, here are some guns, have fun everyone!".

Also, adressing the "hunger" that they talk about. I think thats to do with radation, the kid mentions something about bieng a mutant, could be it.

Regardless, it really gets on my nerves when people complain about things like The Family in Fallout 3. you mi's'well go complaining to the government about a bunch of goths.

have to agree on the last post... theyre just crazy lunatiucs who think theyre vampires... i dunno whats wrong with that there are enough freaks outside your room which think the same... and prolly more after the apokalypse

and apart from them eating human flesh i kinda liked em too... if you dont like it dont play it easy as that... i honestly dont see your problems and cant understand why you have such a problem with it but each his own i guess...

also regarding this quest being a rip off... everything is one... i cant remember any original fiction which wasnt based on somin else, same goes for music and so on... but if thats a problem you prolly shouldnt play any games, listen to no music nor watch any movies at all...

and plz stop with that emo nonsense... lol... -.- atm you look like some...

Actually, they are cannibals who are pretending to be vampires because the self-image as vampires is more tolerable than their self-image as cannibals (there are no positive images of cannibals in the culture). Vince isn't fooling himself, but he is trying to fool the others. I don't think that this is shown to be a healthy or harmless relationship at all - these people still kill except when bribed not to.
