Feltorn Von Dentai
Er, actually, they never actually killed anyone in Arefu according to King (he only says they killed... Ivan is it? anyway, the kids family becuase hes so paranoid about it), they just came and harrassed them in the night and killed off all their brahmin. And its semi-true what Grumbler said, but Vance is actually trying to help people in some sort of way, teaching them not to kill people and not to be a cannible. But yes, Vance probably chose the image of the vampire because its more tolerable then that of a cannible.
MehunesJack
I didn't mind the whole vampire thing, I thought it was pretty cool. What Vance said made little sense at first, and then it gradually weaves in. A whole hell of a lot better than Arefu saying 'Raid the Family and kill them'. About the whole psychological thing, yes eating dead bodies is pretty nasty. But really, in the wasteland there really is little else to eat that isn't irradiated. And blood, bodies, water, and Stimpaks are the only things that are really safe. The latter are less common than the former so... Besides, would you want some of these people to be running around killing people hm?
frankc
Take a look around a raider camp if you want to see real crazy, the Family is barely a 6 on the wack-o-meter. I think the cannibal idea is very cool - it shows just how desperate and depraved life in the wasteland can be. But the vampire thing was so silly it brought the whole quest down to a mere "meh" rating. "Meh" pretty much sums up my entire attitude to the Family. A so-so story and placed so far from the world map that I never bother going back to sell them blood packs.
