Returning player, looking for some mod selection advice

I stopped playing Skyrim about when SE was released. I have just installed Skyrim SE and am nearing the end of installing the STEP mods and have a few questions before I get started.

Once I have STEP installed I want to add a few more things that I used to always play with:

  1. For immersion, I used to run with Frostfall, iNeed, and Wet and Cold. Are these mods still good in SE, or have they been superseded by newer mods in this time? Should they work fine, or are there known incompatibilities with STEP?
  2. I also used to run with Immersive Patrols and Immersive World Encounters. In the same way, Amazing Follower Tweaks and Followers Can Relax were simple mods that added a lot. Are they all still good in SE?
  3. I used to play with SkyRe and PerMa, but I do recall these were hefty mods that did not play well with a lot of others. Are they still good today, or have they been superseded? Are they safe with STEP?
  4. My favourite home used to be the old Build Your Own Home mod, but it looks like it was not updated to SE. I found it a whole lot of fun, and in a useful location. Has a newer (and better?) mod 'replaced' it?

I seem to recall that you used to need to use Wrye Bash to make a bashed patch when adding extra mods on top of STEP. Is that still the same process today?

1) I don't use them myself but from forum posts and latest mods entries over the past 1-1/2 years I've been playing, I believe at least the first two are considered the SOP way to add those enhancements and associated challenges.

2) I don't use immersive patrols or the other "immersive" mod but they sound familiar, so I;'ll say "maybe?"

AFT is one of two or three follower managers frequently used. I'm tempted to say that AFT is the most popular follower management system, but tbh, I really don't know, just basing it on frequency of occurrence in forum posts here and at Lover's Lab. I use AFT, and I use followers can relax

AFT - https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/6656

FCR - https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/4795

Extensible Follower Framework (EFF) is also another popular system you *might review before installing. they cannot be used together and each has certain pros and well possibly cons. can't say for EFF, as I haven't used it, but there are aspects that make me wonder if I shouldn't have... In any case, I think that once you begin using a specific follower manager you kinda get locked in, so best to do homework up front.

3) No clue (and ftr, no clue what STEP is either, at least i the context of this game)

4) I recognize the name from some MXR youtube video along the way, but I'm not sure how popular that is or if it even exists in SE.

However, there are the Hearthfire homes, afaik, part of the default Bethesda SE package, which have to be "built", (maybe they were made to fulfill that role idk, predates me) once you are allowed (you have to achieve certain "societal" goals to gain the right to build one). There is also at least one player home I recall seeing along the way that allows (or requires) a process of "building" similar to that of the hearthfire addition, and afaik, it's presented as a defacto quest of sorts. (as I recall in passing, its a castle in disrepair that you have to fix). there may be others.

Wet and Cold is fine if that is what you like. I use Vivid Weathers.

I used AFT for Oldrim but use EFF for SE. Both work, but EFF is simpler.

Try searching for 'Build'. There are some. There is also one which does the building for you but gives you a choice of what kind of building you want.

I don't use huge global mods or random generating mods which are likely to conflict except those few that have stood the test of time and a great deal of bashing.

Using Frostfall requires Campfire and I've been using both mods for a long time, but in recent years I stop using Frostfall as it causes scripting issues in-game e.g too many scripts slow down gameplay.

As for the bashed patch, yes, the process are still the same and hasn't changed. You should always rebuild the bashed patch regardless what you do e.g installing, uninstalling, changing loadorder for a mod etc.
