AndyRobMoffy
Hey people, thanks for checking out my topic discussion. Here's my spec: GTX 660 GPU AMD bulldozer 4.2 GHZ CPU 16Gb RAM 800w PSU I have skyrim purchased on steam with the texture pack also installed. I can run skyrim in ultra settings but when I move a lot or sprint then it lags or jolts for a second before returning to a normal pace. It happens every 5-10 seconds when moving. I think its just general lag. I switched to high settings after this had finally wound me up and it still happens. What the **** is going on? Please help if you can. Thanks so much
AnimeOtaku102
Well, setting aside the cookie cutter "are all your drivers up to date" question, is there anything running in the background that might be hogging the CPU/GPU cycles? Do you have the game installed on a different drive (or different partition on the same drive)? Try disabling the Steam overlay, disabling Window's Aero (my card fan used to run constantly with Aero on, while idling it hogs resources like a game), and... well, I guess defragging. No idea why you're experiencing pauses, your specs are better than my machine and I've played Skyrim with Mass Effect 3 minimized in the background (forgot I tabbed out) with only a very slight performance hit. dragonslayer2k12
Would that be a 660 or a 660ti? Memory bandwidth is very different between those two cards. That amd processor might be the problem too since amd had so much trouble getting it going and problems with motherboard manufacturers when it first came out etc. Also if you have shadows cranked up with ini settings changes and all shadows turned on like land shadows and tree shadows and your ugrids to load is 7 or higher you will get the stuttering. I have a gtx 560ti 1gb model and I only get stuttering with ugrids set to 7 and shadows all cranked up. Oh and using the official HD texture packs will make this happen too for some people like me that only have 1gb vram.
Rooker75
Defrag the hard drive. Turn down shadow quality. Reduce AA or FXAA (whichever you're using). If you had a bunch of mods installed, I'd suggest the Mods Optimizer, but I don't think it does anything for the base game or official HD pack. I strongly recommend this tweaking guide. Lots of good tips in there.
Kalgarrigan
I run Skyrim on a Windows partition on my 27 inch iMac and I don't get any lag at all.In fact i have about 8 Windows computers in the house and one with pretty high specs but the iMac p...es all over it.Oh, and the graphics are awesome Super HiRes). Super fast load screens too. I run with 16 gm memory too.Go Apple (with a side dish of Windows). Funny, I can't do it the other way round?
dtrower
I would suggest uninstalling the hi res textures if you only have 1Gb of vram and see if that helps.

HalloweenWeed
Actually this sort of thing can be caused by other applications/services running on your PC in the background. In order to determine this, you need to watch your framerate. You can do this by turning it on in Steam (making sure the overlay is enabled for Skyrim) or other framerate utilities. Without this info, we are just "shooting in the dark" at possible problems. kindly check the date of this topic! Oh crap. doncoll what are you doing? #@&*#$^&@!!!kindly check the date of this topic!
