Weird Problem With Edited NPC

I edited the face of an existing NPC (Aela), and exported the face data.

For a while everything was working fine. Until today, when I walk up to her and her face seems to have reverted to the original face (albeit missing her makeup).

No matter how many times I load my esp in creation kit, check to make sure the custom face is correct in the creation kit, export face data and relaunch the game, the character in game will not have the mesh/texture from the esp.

Tried disabling/enabling her with no success.

Anyone know what can be causing this?

Thanks

This is maybe off base, but are you sure you are looking at the NPC that you changed? I think that if you created an esp, and renamed her, for example, the game may not be spawning your alternate Aela from the esp, but rather the default, unmodded Aela. I suspect something like a resurrect or even a respawn might cause that. Just a thought....

The edited NPC is correct. Their name is not Changed

As I said, everything was working fine. Then after a steam cloud sync and updating a mod. The NPC reverts to their original mesh. The updated mod is the immersive weapons mod, so it should not affect the NPCs afaik.

It is driving me insane. I'm sure here is a forehead slapping simplicity to this that I am missing.

I might suggest giving the NPC Editor a shot. As long as you have the BSA and ESP files in your game you should be able to open the ESP file with the NPCE and save over it (I would make a new file in your Documents folder and zip the two files together "esp and bsa" then do a manual install with the NMM). I would then remove your old files and replace them with the new ones. I have made close to 100 NPC mods with the NPCE with about 52 uploaded here on the Nexus and never had what you are describing happen with any of my changed NPC's or replacers.

Edit: Guess what? I just came across the same issue as you have, I remembered I installed the Unofficial Skyrim Patch Sunday. I removed it and all my replacers are back to normal! Too funny

I think something in some mods I am using is causing corruption of my BSA. I had to re create the NPC from scratch (start the process from zero) after uninstalling the npc modiffication.

Basically I uninstalled the npc plugin I had made, launched skyrim, loaded a savegame with the character in proximity, saved without the mod, went to creation kit, re did everything from scratch as if I was doing a new NPC. This got it to work. After that I was able to copy over the generated face mesh and textures and get it to work again.

I was never able to get NPC editor working. If I created any follower / npc with it, savegames would just crash to desktop. I understand it has not been updated in almost a year so it has some problems with newer patches and dlc.

'Immersive Weapons' does edit the records of some unique named NPCs, in order to assign some of IW's weapons to their inventory (which cannot be accomplished by leveled list edits because they are unique NPCs, not random spawns). Since this is not a 'true conflict', it's very easy to merge the records using TES5Edit (Wrye Bash will not do it automatically). First thing is just to figure out if that's the case by either loading your NPC plugin after IW's esp or by disabling IW and see if your NPC changes appear again (or if you are familiar with TES5Edit, just check out the esp records).

Also, I don't recommend the NPC Editor. It is outdated and creates a mess of things (like esp's that can't be properly read by TES5Edit, duplicate hair records, etc.).
