Oh god I'm so confused

Hello y'all,

I'm COMPLETELY new to modding in Skyrim and I have been following the STEP v2.2.0a Guide, and when I thought I had everything done correctly, I tried starting with some mods selected but it didn't work.

I've got four different programs now; BOSS Userlist Manager, Nexus Mod Manager, skse loader and ENB injector. I'm confused how to use what in what order, so I could use some help with that.

I downloaded the latest version of the ENBseries of that boris for Skyrim and tried to make that work by using the injector first, then starting via the launcher and, before all of that, making the changes in SkyrimPrefs. It didn't work.

I'm just so confused, I downloaded so much stuff that I was supposed to be needing according to the STEP guide but I just ended up completely confused and maybe messing up my Skyrim completely. Ofcourse I made a backup, but I do not understand why you need tens of thousands of programs, and never using most of em.

If somebody could just explain the big picture to me, or a step by step guide, I'd probably get much further, cause this STEP guide isn't exactly made for people who aren't into modding, but I'm really eager to mod Skyrim. I´ve deleted everything and reinstalled everything for a fresh start.

Greetings,

A confused Kokosnootje

OK. BOSS is a program used to run a logic patttern over the mods with the view that they avoid all possible conflicts. This is achieved by referencing different REF IDs (names and codes attached to edits with the mods, which are .ESP FILES) and looking for potential conflicts and reordering this, thus attempting to avoid crashes and lower instability. However, this does not take into account person preference. I would suggest using BOSS but developing your modding knowledge so you can manually achieve a conflict free environment.

SKSE on the other hand is a third party script extenting program that attaches itself to the TESV.exe. This is not backwards true for the TESV.exe so it wont desttroy your game. SKSE is designed so that certain mods are able to use certain extended scripting references and functions that are unavailable to the average modder and Creation Kit resources. This does not matter in terms of installation but YOU MUST RUN IT TO START THE GAME as it is not an injector but a third party program.

The Nexus mod Manager is a utility used to easily manage and install up to around 255 mods. It locates your Skyrim DATA folder and installs mods. Unlike BOSS it does not reorder your mods in any logical pattern but alike BOSS, i suggest you develop your modding abilities so you are able to manually install certain mods because not all are "Nexus Friendly" Logically, you should run BOSS everytime you install a new mod and THEN make user adjustments

Finally, ENB injectors input certain files in a way I am unfamiliar with. What I do know is this proccess adds certain POST FXs to the vanilla game such as HDR, Bloom, Ambient Occlusion, Depth of Field. Basically, it is just increased and either enhanced or de-enchanced lighting and it customizable. BOSS, NMM and SKSE all have no affect on this and therefore, it installation is totally irrelevent. However, I think from past experience, (I use MGE's Imaginator for lighting), that you have to run TESV.exe once and go into options. It should auto select the ENb. Im not sure though.

Anyway, hope this helps, have fun!

First off are you playing Skyrim on a Desktop or Laptop? If you're on a Desktop, don't use the injector version, just get the wrapper version (It's install, configure, and forget).

Second. slow down. Install one thing from the S.T.E.P. guide, get it working properly and configured how you like it (test it!) then move on. Keep BOSS and NMM for sure (they're essential tools that you'll use all of the time); work on getting ENB set up.

Open the BOSS GUI, click "Run BOSS". it will resort your load order according to the BOSS Masterlist (a list made by the developers and maintainers of BOSS primarily based on user suggestions). It will also spit out a log with a detailed report showing the resorted load order along with a lot of really useful notes on the plugins you're running.

Then in NMM if you need to manually make some changes just select a plugin (on the plugins tab) and click "Move Up" or "Move Down". To automate these changes, you can setup user rules in BOSS. Documentation on User Rules can be found under the \Docs\ folder found at your BOSS installation directory (more specifically, BOSS Userlist Syntax.html.
