Fallout 3 Crashing - Looking for some help

My fallout 3 game is the GOTY Version on steam.

 

So I have been playing FO3 w/ a ton of mods for awhile now and it would crash randomly at any location/time while playing normally. What I've noticed is that whenever I've been outside in the wasteland for way too long and then go inside a house or something that triggers loading the loading screen will freeze on me, sometimes I just get random "Fallout 3 Stopped Working" crashes and freezing out of nowhere doing random stuff. Sometimes it's the other way around, there were instances where I stayed probably no more than 5 minutes inside a house(Small Ranch near Springvale), tried to go outside and it crashed/froze on me.

 

One other thing I have noticed that was fairly consistent is crashing/freezing when I go from Megaton to Rivet City by walking. The most consistent location that the crash happens in is when I get close to the bridge where a bunch of raiders are living in it with the Brotherhood of Steel hideout on the other side. I already did the fix that Prensa suggested in other threads with using FO3Edit on the Unofficial FO3 Patch - Broken Steel.esp but this doesn't seem to fix the problem. I can go inside Rivet City and be around/near/inside it if I save the game somewhere near the bridge, this prevents my game from crashing when I walk towards Rivet City. The very specific thing that I just can't do is walk from Megaton to Rivet City by taking this route, if I save near the granny living in the shack near the river and then go through that route I can pass by without the game crashing/freezing on me. My speculations would be that I can't stay outside in the wasteland for too long and then head somewhere big like a city/town. I remember crashing/freezing in the loading screen when I try to go inside Megaton if I stayed outside in the wasteland for a prolonged duration.

Here are my PC Specs:

 

CPU - i7 3770k (overclocked 4.6ghz)

RAM - 16gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600mhz

MOBO - Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H

GPU 1 - GTX 560ti (My TV is connected to this GPU through HDMI-DVI Connector -- this is my main "monitor" and where I play my games i.e. Fallout 3) I left this card with STOCK/FACTORY SETTINGS

GPU 2 - GTX 460 (Two monitors are connected to this GPU -- PhysX)

OS HardDrive - 120gb Corsair Force GT SSD (This is where my OS is installed)

Game HardDrive - Not entirely sure about the specific hardware as I have a bunch of other hard drives (This is where my steam is installed)

OS - Windows 7 64bit

 

Any help would be appreciated, I will update the topic post with other stuff I find that can help diagnose my game's problem.

 

 

UPDATE 1: Disabled all of my mods on FOMM leaving only Fallout3.esm, Anchorage.esm, The Pitt.esm, Broken Steel.esm, Point Lookout.esm, Zeta.esm checked. I then tried going from Megaton to Rivet City by walking and yay, no crashes. Gonna do trial and error with the other mods, hopefully I can single out which mod(s) is causing this instability on my game.

 

UPDATE 2: Added my original fallout.ini file. Applied Prensa's fix in this post. Still testing a bunch of my mods, I have noticed something fishy go on(crashing when I get inside Rivet City) when I have my streetlights mod enabled.

Look at this thread and make the .ini changes. http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/888529-help-with-game-freezes-load-order-help/ Make sure you change the correct .ini. It is the one in the Users\"name"\Documents\My Games\Fallout3 folder.

 

 

That's actually the very first thing I did the moment I installed Fallout 3, check the .ini I posted, you'll see that it's already there.

Well the CTD's on saves in & around Rivet City & Project Purity that you mention is probably the bug that's in Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch - Broken Steel.esp.

 

I see you've found & applied the fix from here:

However, when I wrote that original fix I had a slightly different version of the Broken Steel patch plugin.

 

The version that's downloaded now is slightly different in structure which means you may have had difficulty finding where to apply the second part of the fix in FO3Edit.

 

I did a post that's a little ways on from the fix instructing how to fix the other version but it's a bit buried now.

 

The first part of the fix works for both.

 

The second part can be found directly by doing this:

 

Copy & paste this into the FormID window at the top of FO3Edit:

 

0001f1f3

 

& press Enter/Return.

 

That should take you direct to the setting.

 

The column you want to make the changes to will be the "Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch - Broken Steel.esp" one.

 

Just follow the original instructions from:

 

"Once again it's the Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch - Broken Steel.esp column we want to modify. "

 

As to your load order there's a slight error with MMM/FWE, you don't need the:

Now to the freezing, that's almost always due to the Fallout 3 multi core bug.

 

Fallout 3 has trouble with multi core computers, mainly with ones that have more than two cores & use hyperthreading.

 

I see you've applied the fix, I take it you applied that to the correct .ini? As there are two & it's often applied to the wrong one.

 

The one you want to change is:

 

For XP:

 

My Documents\My Games\Fallout3\

 

For Vista & Win7:

 

Documents\My Games\Fallout3

 

The file you want will be called:

 

FALLOUT.ini

 

Open the .ini with Notepad & change this line:

 

bUseThreadedAI=0

 

to:

 

bUseThreadedAI=1

 

& insert this line under it:

 

iNumHWThreads=2

 

Save & close your ini.

 

Now I do notice you have a customised .ini.

 

Of note are all the extra lines involving Threads like:

I don't think that's a good idea, Fallout 3 really hates multithreading across several cores & this could be running counter to what the 2 lines of the standard fix do.

 

Since you are getting freezing still, something that should not happen with the normal two line fix, I'd try a standard .ini with just the two line fix I mention above in it.

 

See how you get on with that .ini, you can alwys save your tweaked one & go back to it if prefer it.

That turn off & check method is definitely a good way to identify mod trouble, I often recommend it for bug hunting. :)

Update 2 on topic post.

 

Thanks for the help @Prensa, I did not know about that 2nd part of the fix you just mentioned so I went ahead and applied it. Tested it with the rest of my mods and the problem is still there, so I'm assuming that one of my other installed mods is causing the instability on the game. So far I have tested the Unofficial Patch and the Streetlights mod, today is going to be a very long day for me :P

 

Oh yeah, I also added my original Fallout.ini file in the topic post with nothing else changed except for the two added multi-core fix lines, be sure to check that. I have tested both of them and they seem to work fine, but in any case, I'll start doing most of my testing with the original fallout.ini file only.

 

Edit: So I have these enabled and I crashed inside Rivet City going from the lobby to the inside of the Science Lab(crashed when I interacted with the door, not as I was approaching)

Edit2: The crash is happening specifically in the science lab room, I have no idea what caused this.

 

The way I'm testing this is by loading a save inside Megaton, going outside and walking towards Rivet City, going straight to the Science Lab room which is where I'm crashing now. I also have god mode enabled. So far with just these mods enabled I don't crash going near Rivet City.

You should get BOSS to handle your load order :http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/10193 and disable the compatibility patches for Project Beauty, you have the Project Beauty.esm disabled. Make sure the DarNifiedUIF3 is the correct one that goes with FWE. A link to the correct version can be found on the FWE description page.

Ok so, I deactivated EVE and deleted it off the load order, reinstalled Unofficial FO3 Patch and applied Prensa's fixes to the ufo3p brokensteel esp and I was finally able to walk from Megaton>Rivet City>Science Lab without crashing. Going to have to keep testing so that I know that test wasn't just a fluke.

Edit: It was just a fluke, somehow it started back up on crashing again when I get near Rivet City, by the steel bridge directly leading to the city. Also, I crashed to desktop while loading on a game for the very first time.
