tk423
Hello. So, I've got a save for a beloved character I made at the launch of Skyrim. Since then the save has been backed up and restored multiple times (I reformat my computer pretty regularly) and had dozens, possibly hundreds, of mods activated and deactivated on it. I'm also starting to believe I've had multiple mods uninstalled incorrectly, probably script heavy ones such as Dance of Death. I recently reinstalled Skyrim and when I try to load my main save it crashes directly to the desktop. I've tried loading it on a vanilla installation of Skyrim and tried loading it with as many of the mods as I had installed that I can remember. Either way it crashes to the desktop. I have one (the same character) from an hour or so previous to my main save. That one will load but I'm sure there are still numerous mod uninstalled incorrectly. I have a feeling this will probably cause my game to behave erratically and crash pretty regularly. I suppose my question is is there a way to scrub a save clean? Get any extra mod related stuff removed and have it be a clean, basically vanilla save and then apply mods to it from there to be sure they are installed correctly? Get any extra mod related stuff removed and have it be a clean, basically vanilla save Nope. Other than texture/mesh/animation replacers, generally every mod will leave something behind in your savegame, though generally harmless, unless they involve scripts. ripple
So is there any way to see what is lingering and potentially making my save crash to desktop or malfunction? Some orphan scripts will show up in your papyrus log. Wrye Bash can show missing esp's from a savegame you made with those esp's present. Other than that, nope. hlaalu24
I've delt with this issue heavily the past few days. Do you have the skyrim.ini you used with your saved game? If you try to load a save with different settings in the ini file that it "remembers" it will crash. Did you copy over the entire my games folder or just your saved game files? I've got all my saves in a .rar and there is an .ini in there that I could have sworn is my most up to date but with it I still CTD.
ripple
What aspect of the old character save are you attached to? Do you just not want to start a new game and have to grind stats, or do you like the character's face (which could be easily transferred to a new save)? Other reasons? And have you tried deleting the skyrim and skyrimprefs ini files to let the game create new ones? And one last question, what hardware changes occurred between when it worked and stopped working? Other reasons? The face I'm very much attached to and the character's current level, perks and completed quests. The inventory isn't necessarily super important though there are some things I would rather not lose. UPDATE- Well, since reinstalling the game and most of my mods I've noticed I've lost pretty much all my mod-added weapons and armor anyway so I suppose inventory isn't too big of a deal at all. If there were any way to transfer my stats, face, completed quests and vanilla inventory to a new save that'd be fantastic. Can you paste the ini file data for me to look at? And have you tried deleting the skyrim and skyrimprefs ini files to let the game create new ones? And one last question, what hardware changes occurred between when it worked and stopped working?I deleted the skyrim and skyrimprefs ini files but that didn't change anything. No hardware changes since the last time I ran the game. Edited January 21, 2013 by tk423
ripple
and had dozens, possibly hundreds, of mods activated and deactivated on it. For this reason alone, you are probably better off starting a new game and using 'Face Transfer' to copy your character's face, unless you feel like coping with an unstable gaming experience. It doesn't seem like there's anything else you can't regain from a second play-through. The 'wont load' part is more of an ultimatum (from the savegame). :armscrossed: Edited January 21, 2013 by ripple
