Another Blender snag

I'm creating a new creature that is half man half ape. I've made the body complete with hands and feet but the only way I can get any amount of detail in the face is to add more verticies.

The head has 7053 verts and 7244 faces while the entire body has only 2340 verts and 2370 faces

since the creature needs to be around 8000 verts when complete, I know that I'm doing something wrong. I've read in tutorials about compressing meshes. Is there a way to compress the head so that it doesn't have so many verts and faces? Should I remake the head with less verts and faces? What about the detail? Should I make the head part of the body and only put details in the face? that's what I see with creatures like the wolf where only the face is separated from the mesh? I could use some advice from those more experienced than I with this kind of problem.

OK, so I deleted the head and cleaned up the edges of the face. I built the head as part of the body and imported the new face mesh. I added a little color (not the color the finished race will be) I've gotten the vert and face counts below 8000 combined so I should be able to use it in game now. I still don't know how Bethesda got so much detail in an ogres head with so few faces.

I'm still working on armatures, animations, rigging and I haven't any idea how to texture yet even though I can UV map the meshes that I make.

I would appreciate any information that you might be able to post here.

Last night while working on him I noticed how much he was looking like the Hulk, so I painted him green and imported him into the game. I took this screenshot for fun but it shows the size I am hoping for.

I know how to cut the mesh and lay it out for texturing but I still need to learn about adding textures, Thanks for the links I can always use new links. I checked out the first one and I'll check out the rest now.

VERY nice, i'm impressed as usual! I wish I had the patience to deal with making creatures!

Thanks armageddon818. Patience is the correct word to describe what you need if you are going to learn this. It seems that every tutorial either leaves out something or assumes that you know how to do something. I haven't done a tutorial yet that I didn't get stuck in at one point or another. I was going through an armature (skeleton) tutorial last night and it said that the first two bones control everything else. After I finished the skeleton and began the weight painting tutorial the author said to delete the first two bones. Later t in the same tutorial he tells you to go back and select the first two bones. How are you supposed to select bones that you've deleted?

I run into those kinds of problems a lot but I'm getting there and soon, you'll see these creatures and more ingame.

In case anyone is interested I am making the killer robot from Robo Cop. The Ed209 is just for me to test things on and as soon as he is done I'll release him as a fun stand alone mod
