"Trouble On The Homefront" quest

After following the emergency broadcast from Amata to return to Vault 101, you're faced with resolving their disagreements. I tried this several ways with a couple of saves. However you choose to complete the quest, you get kicked out of the vault for your trouble. Now, at the beginning of my game, I did not kill the Overseer, and I was very friendly to Amata. When I returned, I continued in my diplomatic ways.

It seems you get good karma as long as you resolve it without violence, regardless of whether you persuade them to open the vault or persuade them to keep it closed. As for me, I spoke to the Overseer, got his side of the story, accepted his "apology," and found info on his computer which I showed to Amata, that proved that he really was protecting the citizens from dangers like the Enclave, to convince her to stay where it's safe, comfortable, and clean, because my primary concern was for her safety and the safety of the people I grew up with.

Ultimately, I wasn't really happy with any of the solutions, because of the whole "Thank you, now get out" thing. So I reloaded a save and just left it unresolved, so I could just come back to the vault any time I wanted, and the people would still have things to say.

That really seems to be a pattern in this game, and in Oblivion before it. Completing many quests seems to just lead to more areas destroyed or closed off to you, and fewer NPCs in the world, and there weren't enough to begin with.

I agree. Though i hate the fact they make some quests like this, it does help the karma system out and perhaps even the player. As there is no clear right or wrong answer to everything, as in this situation since all the solutions leave some bitterness behind IMO.

I chose a different option, I showed the overseer that he couldn't control his own security team. Amata then becomes the new overseer and indeed asks you to leave... But as I recall, she does imply that you could come back after things have settled down, repairs have been made and trade has been established... Not that this ever happens during the game... :wallbash:

Heh, seems like it really should be possible to still show the Overseer or maybe Amata that "maverick security team" note even if you choose to leave the Overseer in charge. Otherwise, more people are probably going to die if there's another incident like this. It's just a lose-lose situation, it seems to me. Danger within or danger without.

I just sabotaged the vault's systems, so people have to abandon the vault. Much more fun to watch everyone freaking out and blaming each other than trying to help one side gain supremacy so they can kick you out. If you're getting thrown out of a glorified cave you called home for 19 years, you might as well start a few fires before you leave

I continued the (short) tradition of killing the Overseer. I barely comprehended why Amata forced you to leave 101 forever, her comments were so vague and absurd. It was all so disappointing. I had expected the quest to be more deep, with a better outcome.

All I basically did was kill the Overseer, listen to the civilians incoherently babbling, then leave the Vault (Forever). I expected some kind of welcome, but no, it was just: "Could you take care of the Overseer?" And this is what they say when I take care of their problem: "Get the hell out, you're not welcome here anymore."

Not to mention that the Overseer almost immediately attacked me. I consider this one of Fallout 3's worst quests, while it should have been one of the best ones. :verymad:

The Overseer attacked me on sight the first time I went through the quest, too, so when I reloaded to try it a different way, I was extra cautious when I was sneaking around the Overseer, only to be surprised when he just turned around and started talking to me without any immediate threat.

You know, I think Amata's strange rationale for kicking you out of the vault would only make sense if it really is only about 10 people still living in that vault, and not the many more that are supposed to be "implied" that we never get to see. What do we have, 1 leader, 3 security guards, and 6 normal citizens now?

I didn't mean to imply that he attacked me on sight, I meant that I chose my preferred reply to his opening words, after which he said something I don't quite remember, called me a punk (The last Overseer did that too) and became hostile. It was immensely satisfying when I blew his head off with my Wazer Wifle. And I guess Beth hasn't kicked off the old habits from Oblivion (There were only about two or three hundred people in the entire place, not counting respawns). I thought Vaults could shelter up to a thousand people?
