hey guys recently got a new laptop and i'm pretty sure it's a decent laptop but it's having trouble running oblivion in certain area's such as inside places and when fighting. keep having to use the cheat tlb to make it run faster but it looks horrible. any help would be appreciated.

here are my specs.

processor: AMD A8-4500M APU with radeon HD graphics 1.90GHz

Installed memory (RAM): 6.00 GB (5.46 GB usable)

system type: 64-bit operating system, 64x based processor.

im running on windows 8.

it is the frequency of the processor.

Oblivion is using one core, so that no matter how many of them in the processor,

moreover, calculates the entire scene (invisible objects, npc, behind a wall for example).

(Except game settings, it may be advisable not to use high-poly models-meshes (bodies, clothes, objects))

ps. And , even this may be because of the sounds, especially the steps of animals.

CPU overload by the sounds of it. Oblivion doesn't use multiple cores (at least not well) and is very reliant on processor cycle speed to get things moving. Combat AI is well known for taxing the processor greatly.

If you're getting massive slowdowns in combat, you could give my Combat FPS Booster a try.

i'm dreadful with this stuff? if you could explain basically what I could do to increase fps that'd be great! downloading the combat booster now.

Basically, what DKZZ2 is saying is that the processor is a bit slow to run Oblivion. There's not much you can do about a slow processor:

  •
  • Buy a new processor / computer (obvious)
  • Overclock it. This is basically forcing the processor to run faster than it originally did, giving a small to moderate performance boost. Not recommended unless you know what you're doing as the wrong settings could burn out components!

Now to explain the core thingy in English. The processor is your computer's "brain". Its "power" depends on a few things:

  1.
  2. Clock speed - A 1 GHz processor runs 1,000,000,000 times per second. A 1.9 GHz processor runs 1,900,000,000 times per second. Obviously, the higher the clock speed, the faster the processor runs! Each time the processor runs is called a cycle.
  3. Processor technology (also known as "architecture") - A simple processor can only do a simple calculation each cycle. Newer, more advanced ones can do a more complex calculation each cycle. Limitation: The software needs to know how to use the newer technology!
  4. Multiple Cores - Each core is basically a processor. So a dual-core processor is like having two processors, and a quad-core one is like having four processors. Limitation: The software needs to know how to use multiple cores!

Oblivion benefits greatly from higher clock speeds. It doesn't make much use of advanced processor technology or multiple cores. That's why it may run faster with an older processor running at 4 GHz than a newer quad-core one that "only" runs at 3 GHz.

That Combat FPS Booster thingy that you're downloading basically tries to reduce the amount of work your processor has to do.

Search the Oblivion Technical support forum an elsewhere for information on INI settinga to get some use out of your additional cores.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Ini_Settings#Multi-core_CPU_tweaks

http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/413707-low-fps-on-a-decent-gaming-laptop

Performance improvement from these is rather limited because the Oblivion processes that you can thus tweak are not the ones making the must demand on the CPU core.
