  2. 2. (Please only answer this if you answered "Depends" in the previous question) I WOULD mind dialogue without voice if:

    • If it wasn't a fast dialogue, no matter the NPC.

    • The NPC in question, is one that has a voice in the vanilla version.

    • It's an NPC that I talk to often, and has a voice in the vanilla version.

one of the best player made voiceovers for Oblivion was one of the theif mods....oh sh*t i forget the name exactly, the one where the kid runs up to you "hey mister hey mister!"...the kid was pretty good, then the main NPC...(Basso? was that it?) was rather well done too, with good technical sound quality and an interesting accent.

not to beat a dead horse, but some of the voice acting in vanilla FO3 (and oblivion for that matter) makes me cringe. There's some really bad cadences and bad line deliveries...the guard in Big Town is probably one good example, and there are many many examples in vanilla FO3.

Point being, i prefer to have voiceovers, as long as they're well done. The illusion is shattered for me if it's bad acting, but you also lose something with text-only dialogue. Voice is hard to forego, if for no other reason than you know that they CAN be there and they CAN be done well.

I would be able to tolerate a mod that didn't have voice acting, but I would much prefer it. However, if it is a mod that tries to add stuff to an existing NPC, and so I have to go from there being voice acting to sudden silence, it breaks immersion for me, and I wouldn't use the mod.

I wouldn't mind mods with voice acting, provided that the recording and acting quality are decent. Listening to NPCs with a whole lot of static going on or simply badly acted dialogue is the biggest factor for me to not want voice overs on NPCs. Adding dialogue to existing NPCs is, unless you can get the original cast to do it (yeah right!), a big no-no for me as that'd be completely counter-immersive... unless all the NPC's dialogue was done in the new voice.

The more obvious (to me) solution is to just never modify and existing NPC, dialogue-wise. It's not as though there isn't enough room in the wasteland for a new NPC.

I have the same point of view, however if you did decide to add dialogue to an existing NPC I wouldn't use the mod unless all the dialogue of that NPC was redone in the new voice. Then I might consider using it, but not if it's just tagged onto existing dialogue. ;)

Of course, this makes a bigger problem if someone wants to modify Moira, for example. She has a unique voice, so even a re-recording would sound out of place until you got used to it. (Not to mention how many files would be needed.) Modifying one of the smaller NPCs would be less problematic.

I voted "Depends" and "Other". Voice acting, if done properly, adds a lot of depth. Also, if you can splice together voice bits to make new lines for existing NPCs, that is far preferable to text only. However, as a general rule, I don't mind if there's no voice. I'm an old Fallout fan, I'm used to NPCs without voice, although I do like the voice. If there is no voice, however, I expect for the dialog to be detailed and fleshed out, more like the original Fallout games. That means many different ways and options in dialog, and tons of opportunity for skill checks to make every character feel considered.

Voice is nice, but if you don't do voice you can spend more time making it complex and freeform. I'd rather have options where a charismatic or strong character can take over a situation than have voice but for a simple one-direction dialog.

First of all, thx for all the opinions.

In my opinion. Ofc having voice acting would always be preferable to silent dialogue, as long as the acting wasnt so bad, as to make me not want it to have no sound.

However, for most modders, dialogue acting would be very hard to include in mods, so i expect to see many mods that add silent dialogue to the game. If this is this case, and in my personal opinion, i think it's still possible for it to give imersion if it's done right.

So I guess the basic reason i made this poll was to find out what exactly would srew the immersion for people. For example i think that adding silent dialogue to an NPC that already has a voice, can screw the immersion for me. But on the other hand, if i walk up to an npc and dont even hear a "Hi", it can also have the same effect for me.

And thx again for all the opinions.

Depends on how well its done. Good voice acting can add a whole new level of polish to a mod and set it at a level higher than the crap Beth likes to dole out to the illiterate masses. Decent voice acting adds an additional level of polish. Bad voice acting can kill a good mod. In general, I'd rather have have voice acting but only if it can be done reasonably well. No voice acting is better than bad voice acting.
