Fix Female Argonian Sneaking Tail

Hi all,

I'm looking for a fix to the annoying 90-degree twist bug that occurs to Argonian female characters when walking in Sneak mode. This bug has existed since Skyrim was released.

Video demonstration:

I'm willing to fix it myself, but lack the know-how. I've tried investigating various KF files in nifskope, and even went on a long quest involving several threads over at the nifskope forums, trying to edit the tail meshes directly. All of this was fruitless, and riddled with weird bugs and problems I couldn't overcome with the limitations of the plugins offered for Maya. I know it's fixable, but nobody else has tried, and I don't know what I'm doing. :/

In all of the Nexus, I've seen only one mod mention they "may" have fixed it. Unfortunately, that turned out to not be the case.

I'm certain it's a matter of one or two little nifskope edits. There's one little value out there, somewhere, that says "90" when it should say "0". Or something. If only someone who knew what they were doing would take a quick look and tell me what to change, then I'll be eternally grateful to that person. It would finally eliminate of my biggest Skyrim pet peeves. And if you'd rather not upload a mod for it, I'll do that, too, and give you full credit. I know there's other people who find this as annoying as I do!

Well, thanks for reading, if anyone does. <3

Test if it happens for males as well, if not. That's your guide.

It doesn't, but that doesn't get me anywhere... I don't know if I should be editing KFs, HKXs, skeletons, animations, nodes, or what. This is a two-year quest for me, so rest assured I have spent many, maaaaany long sleepless nights banging my head against the problem. :)

Mmm..

I don't really think it's animation bug.

Somehow it sounds like the skeleton gets funky  during sneaking animation.

So I'd say it might be on beast skeleton, OR in the tail mesh itself.

Is there two different tails for argonians? male and female versions? If so, how about copying male one, and renaming so it replaces female one.

Via this it'd be possible to check if the bug is in the tail or in the actual skeleton.

Thank you for your suggestions. I tested them just now.

I replaced the following files with their male equivilents:

Data\Meshes\actors\character\character assets\femaletailargonian.nif

Data\Meshes\actors\character\character assets female\skeletonbeast_female.nif

The tail still turned sideways during sneak walk forward.

Edit: As the screenshot may not be very clear, I am recording a demonstration video. While recording, I also remembered that the same tail-twist occurs during the transition from sneak-running to sneak-idle. I daresay the effect is even more pronounced then, and you will clearly see what I mean in the footage. I'll post the link ASAP!

Edit again:

Please ignore the texture error, this happened as a result of replacing those files mentioned above, and I forgot to change them back before I recorded. :P Edited by Moogiefluff

Apologies for the double-post, but I think I've stumbled across something important.

Using the hkxcmd conversion tool, I inspected various skeletons and animations using the Havok Preview tool. And suddenly, I came across something that looks... promising?

Behold!

This animation, sneakwalk_forward.hkx, paired with tailskeleton.hkx has a -90 degree Y rotation on all of its bones. I know this because I compared it to other animations, which all point those green lines (the Y axis) upwards from the grid; in this animation, it points to the left, exactly how the bug shows itself ingame!

And now... I have absolutely no idea how to fix it. The animation refuses to load in Nifskope, stating: "couldn't find the animation's root node (TailExport01)". I tried editing "TailExport01" to "Spn01" or "Plv" but neither of these worked. I don't know what root node it's looking for.

Once again, I am at an impass. But progress is progress... And I'm still holding out hope that someone knowledgable in such matters stumbles across this and understands all of my crazy ranting. ;)

I have just uploaded a patch that should fix this. I simply substituted the backwards sneak tail animation for the forwards sneak tail animation. I think it looks great! http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/32949/

I've already said it on your mod page, but I wanted to repeat it here: Thank you so much, Callik! Such a simple fix, and I never thought of doing it. Lol, I was all "gotta edit the files, nifskope, havok tools, raawr!" and it didn't have to be so goddamned complicated. :P
