CTD on loading cell / saving

Hey all, hoping you can help me solve this one. I haven't been playing Skyrim for a while, and decided to come back once Dragonborn released. Of course, once I did come back I realized that I would have to update all my old mods, and make sure everything would still work. I eventually managed to get everything to run properly, but I've hit a snag. I made a new character, and progressed only as far as travelling to Kynesgrove with Delphine before I started encountering random CTD's when loading new cells. This happens when I fast travel, take a carriage, or simply walk into a new cell. It even happens when I save occasionally.

After some hunting, I found out how to enable the crash logs using Skyrim.ini. Here are the last few lines of my most recent crash log:

[02/06/2013 - 08:59:54PM] warning: Could not find type _teleportModMCM in the type table in save

As you can see, there is a lot of DLC2 going on, and some mention of Hearthfire (which I didn't bother to purchase). I'm hoping you can help me understand what exactly is crashing my game.

The papyrus log is not a 'crash log.' Sometimes it contains useful information about things like orphan scripts in a save game that might help diagnose issues, but mostly it's just debug messages. Replace your load order with a BOSS log (the one with the messages), and enclose it in a spoiler.

Random CTDs are hard to track, especially when there are no easily reproducible patterns to them. CTDs while trying to save is definitely not a good sign (and I am assuming this is all happening with a new game, rather than an old save game from before your break from Skyrim, which is already a 'dirty save' after you've updated your mods to new versions).

1) cleaning: you'll need to clean the plugins flagged by BOSS as containing 'dirty edits' using TES5Edit which you can download from that link (instructions on the same page).

2) Are you sure your SkyRe is updated? SkyRe has now dispensed with manually edited compatibility patches and moved to dynamically generated ones through SkyProc (aka the ReProccer), but I don't see a ReProccer patch in the load order. Also, someone reported today that 'GDO_Plugin_SkyRe.esp' was causing CTDs in their game. I don't use SkyRe so I have no idea what that plugin is suppose to do. Just noting it.

3) Depending on how long ago you took your break from Skyrim, some of the mods may be outdated. Just because they haven't been updated for a while doesn't automatically mean they are usable with the latest version of Skyrim. Compound this with Dragonborn (and a casual glance of the forum topics will give you a good indication of all the things that have been broken by the new DLC), game instability can be expected. A complete reinstall with a fresh mod list may be necessary as a last resort. It may be more expedient than checking every single mod you downloaded to make sure they still work nicely with the latest version of Skyrim and Dragonborn.

Cleaning the plugins sounds like it might help out. I mean, it can't hurt lol. All of my mods are updated to their latest version. I completely reinstalled windows since I stopped playing, and as a result I lost all of my game data. Had to reinstall Skyrim and each mod fresh. Could this be a problem related to SKSE not yet being updated for the most recent Dragonborn patch?

SKSE is already updated for the latest Skyrim patch, which was the patch intended to 'prep' the game for Dragonborn.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Patch

Version 1.8.151.0.7 was released as a Steam beta on 24 October 2012[1] and was released to all PC users on 1 November 2012.[2] It was released for Xbox 360 in English-speaking territories on 16 November 2012.[3]

Required to run the Dragonborn expansion.

I know there are some random people saying that SKSE needs to be updated *again* for Dragonborn. These people are, for a lack of a better word, clueless, so pay them no heed. If they have problems with SKSE + Dragonborn, it's more likely they are using a pirated version of Skyrim with a cracked patch. Dragonborn did break some stuff (as expected with every Beth DLC....), but SKSE is not one of them.

The mass download some people are getting through Steam is the newly minted HD texture DLC, which unlike the previous HD texture DLC, covers not just base game textures but DLC (Dawnguard, Dragonborn) textures as well. It is not a patch and doesn't fix anything (other than some texture bugs introduced by the previous HD texture DLC).

The mods you downloaded, some of them could still be outdated. I find that when I am playing a game I keep track of which mods are being updated, but after taking a break from it I lose track and some times don't realize when a mod that hasn't been updated for several month actually needs an update until I check the comments section (where users are asking for an update and wondering where the modder has disappeared to). So if you just went and redownloaded the mod without the checking the comments, you might not know it. You should double check, just in case.

[edit]

Oh, almost forgot to mention. This is unrelated to your CTD issues, but you'll want to download Wrye Bash to generated a Bashed Patch that will merge the conflicting leveled list edits from the 'give more stuff to NPCs' mods you are using like Cloaks of Skyrim and Immersive Armor so their items will correctly spawn on NPCs.

Ahh, see I thought people were saying that a recent Dragonborn patch was breaking SKSE. If that's not true, then I suppose I might as well try cleaning my plugins, and d/ling Wrye Bash like you suggested. I'll doublecheck my mods and make sure there aren't any super old ones. Maybe there's one in there that doesn't want to play nice with Dragonborn.

Alright. After countless hours of deactivating, reactivating, updating and checking compatibilities for mods I think I've found the culprit. Its this: "Property BloodFX on script zbloodnpcbleed" and it looks like it might have something to do with the Crimson Tide mod I had installed. Its possible that it hasn't been uninstalling itself properly, so I'm going to go in and do it manually. I'll post back to update.

Still nothing. Manually removed all the files involved with the mod, and made a clean save. Game still crashed as soon as I tried to enter a new cell. I'm convinced at this point that it has something to do with Dragonborn, as my game worked just fine previously. Going to do a full reinstall of the game, and only the most critical mods. If that doesn't work, I'm all out of ideas.

Nothing on your load order jumps out at me, so it might not be a 'mod', per se. You could be running out of VRAM. Have you installed a lot of texture packs? Try using the Optimizer Textures mod to reduce your texture sizes. Also, check your INI files and make sure you aren't using uGrids above 5. A lot of people run 7 or higher, but it really makes your game unstable when loading new cells.
