Dragonborn crashing to desktop

Xiony interesting...but my skrim.ini doesn't have the uGrids line. Cell buffer already =36. Thoughts?

FYI I have completely removed all mods including SKSE, kept Dawnguard DLC, verified game cache....The game can CTD from either the load screen or in game. It seems to be time dependant at approx 60 seconcds, which likely means there is something nasty in the background.

help from anyone appreciated! I have been fighting this for 4 months now, Thought I had it fixed with Armour mods, but that wasn't even close.

Yeah, I'm having this happen, and my uGrids was never changed off the default. Reducing uGrids only seems to shrink the dead zones, it doesn't acually deal with the issues.

Hi everybody,

Like most of you, I have been experiencing the same issues with the "Dragonborn" DLC for "TESV: Skyrim", since its release.
This seems to be the longest thread about them, so I will post here, rather than anywhere else on "The Nexus Forums".
These performance/compatibility/stability issues (crashes and freezes) started happening right after I purchased, downloaded and played the "Dragonborn" DLC for the first time.
I had experienced crashes and freezes before, but only after having played, long sessions of the game (e.g. three or more hours).
This was extremely rare and the crashes and/or freezes happened in random exterior locations (cells) throughout the game (map/province of Skyrim) and could not seem to be reproduced in the same location.
However, since the "Dragonborn" DLC came out, I have had quite a few crashes and/or freezes, but only on location of the island of Solstheim, which the DLC introduces.
Needless to say, I play the game on the same PC ("rig").
As soon as my character exits the "relative outer rim" of the city of Raven Rock in order to reach the Temple of Miraak, there is a brief freeze (stutter), and exactly 60 seconds later, regardless of any player ingame activity,
the game crashes to desktop (CTD) or freezes.
This issue occurs in random exterior locations (cells) throughout the island of Solstheim, and has reproduced in the same, time and time again.

The Cause ??? After almost five months of struggling with this problem, I cannot conclusively state that the cause is/are any of the following (not necessarily in this order):

01) Language settings - Some users have reported that language settings for the DLC that are different from those of the base game could cause crashes from the main menu.
02) HD Texture Pack(s) - They could increase the game's overall hardware requirements, and, in theory, contribute to a software enviroment that is more likely to condition these issues.
03) Mods (Load order) - It has been suggested that mods and their (particular) order could be one of the causes, since they affect performance, stability and introduce the problem of (mutual) compatibility.
04) Save file embedded scripts - The game's save file mechanics (system) is complex, and these scripts could, in theory, accumulate over time, "burdening" the save file with redundant data, thus affecting stability.
05) Skyrim Master File (*ESM) data errors - They are known throughout the community as "dirty edits" and could affect performance as to condition these type(s) of issues.
06) Skyrim *INI file settings - It has also been suggested that certain "*ini tweaks" could cause performance/compatibility/stability issues.
07) Game Hardware and Software Requirements - This being one of the most obvious sources of performance/compatibility/stability issues.
08) General Hardware and Software Requirements - Drivers, the operating system version, directx version, auditive and visual settings could, again, cause performance/compatibility/stability issues.

Although I did not solve the problem, I found a way around it, using the console.
Since the issues seemed to be limited to exterior cells, I decided to try and restrict my character's movement(s) on the island of Solstheim, to interiors with "fast travel".
The only way to do this is to "explore" the whole map (for both the Skyrim and Solstheim provinces) with the "toggle map markers" console command (tmm 1 for on, and tmm 0 for off).
As for the "infinite loading screen bug", after leaving the Temple of Miraak, the only way around the problem is, again, the "center on cell" console command (coc <CellID>; e.g. coc WhiterunBreezehome).

This will probably be regarded as "cheating" and/or a major "immersion-breaker", or even as a ridiculous measure, by the more "puritanically" oriented members of the Skyrim community.
I cannot stress enough that my use of the console was a last resort, and that it is, in fact, generally disabled via a tweak in my "Skyrim.ini" file.
Anyway, this is just a "bypass", while the issues remain, almost five months after the "Dragonborn" DLC's release.
I have never experienced a CTD from the game's main menu, so this will not be the subject of my "analysis", for the present.

All the best to you all.

Mephistroth.

I too am having the same problem and I have no clue as to what the cause is, but whenever I get a infinite loading, there is the pillar thing. Check this:

I was wondering if a this time of the year, anybody did found some solution to the constante crashes in the island of Solstheim. I get constant CTD's and freezes all around the land, and my papyrus always shows these errors of script loops:

just one more bit about hair mods - i have extended my experiments to a point, where only vanilla skyrim + all DLCs wit all unofficial patches along with few character-related texture improvements, SkyUI and iHUD plus ONE ESM HAIR MOD (apachii or oblivion) are installed; this setup always go to crash on the very same helgen cutscene point. Disabling the hair esm solves that...

As i simply can't blame few widely used texture mods to be the reason, and the same with unofficial patches, it simply has to be the hair mod fault - or better to say, hair mod with official DLCs'? I have also tried the same setup without official DLCs, and surprisingly, it didn't crash in the obvious cutscene point, but when i tried to go to menu (by pressing ESC) just after the autosave when you jump down of the carriage.

my log looks like this: no rampaging script or such things...

So, i really tend to blame the hair esm. Or we should blame helgen itself, as it was a source of many problems in the past as well?

Oh, and my saves are almost 6mb with all DLCs, 3.3mb without...

Getting rid of Apachii hair mod fixed the issue for me as well. I was crashing every time I inspected the body of cultist at the Temple of Miraak, now everything is fine (except my character is bald). Also, I played through the entire main Skyrim quest line with only a single non-repeatable CTD, and Dragonborn was active the whole time, so it's definitely specific to the actual area.

For myself, to fix this issue to move forward - it would always crash trying to enter the Temple for the first time - I simply reverted back to the default skyrimprefs.ini and skyrim.ini settings.

Some visual mods will make changes for you if installed to the visual skyrimprefs.ini file.

Once I returned them to their original installtion presets, I was able to enter the temple and move forward.

Thanx,Xiony.Worked for me!

Hi, I haved the same problem crach and now work fine (I am very bad in english but I try to explain)

- If you have changed in "Skyrim.ini" uExterior Cell Buffer=36 and uGridsToLoad=5 you have the same probleme of me.(I used this settings before : Cell Buffer=64 and uGridsToLoad=7 and the game crach only in the dragonborn island ...)

Now for change that is not difficult but if you change now and load your game you crach instant :D

- Launch Skyrim and load your game (DON'T CHANGE YOUR "Skyrim.ini" KNOW)

- Enter in a house/dungeon.

- Press Esc for pause the game and press Alt+Tab

- Change your "Skyrim.ini" whit :

uExterior Cell Buffer=36

uGridsToLoad=5

- SAVE "Skyrim.ini"

- Switch in game now, press ² for the console and tape :

refini

for refresh "Skyrim.ini" in game.

- Save the game and try to play ^^

after many save, my save work but my first save did not work for load ....

I think we need time to adapt to the game ...

I have completed a dungeon and after left then, my saved work fine with uGridsToLoad=5.

Try to walk up to the Miraak temple know

Hi everyone. It has been a while now.

I have had no success in solving this problem whatsoever, and I have tried all of (the suggested) legitimate means in order to do so.

It might be helpful to try and get some feedback from the users of the "Legendary Edition", specifically its possible (plausible) "reverse compatibility" with (older) saved games, that were created with the previous edition.

I cannot provide this type of information because I acquired the first (original) edition of the game at retail, and purchased the DLCs through Steam, succesively, and did not experience any issues before "Dragonborn".

Any feedback on this would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Mephistroth.
