Haito13
Yeah so I'm meaning to ask this since G.E.C.K was released. So do we, can we, or should we model those severed limbs. Im having a hard time explaining this sorry, basically what im saying is, if we import into the game our new clothes armor and what not what would happen if a limb has been shot off? Any body know how that works? Thanks P.S Im working on Tactical Gear to replace Combat Armors with what we commonly see today.
Skree000
Im going to go ahead and say (I *think* ) yes, you do need to model it in, basically the models *should* look like action figures, each part can snap off, but while they are all stuck together you dont really notice. (atleast, thats how most games with severable* limbs do it. (ie. Gears of war, Soldier of fortune, etc.) Basically a walking character is not just a solid mesh, but a walking talking cluster of gibs that can blow apart at any time. Haito13
Makes sense, sorry i wasn't familiar with those kinds of techniques i thought a severed limb model was hidden and replaces the normal arms with that when hit. Thanks. Any way can anyone confirm that? I'm already doing the upper body model, kinda hard cause I'm also working on a GTA mod.
jkruse05
You could probably just use the ones from an existing outfit. From what I can tell it just separates the mesh at a point where the assigned bone changes (ie the knee, mesh above is attached to one bone, mesh below to another, so it separates at the knee). If you put them in the right place, and assign them to the right bones I'm thinking you could just use existing ones. Granted this is all speculation, I haven't tried it yet so I really have no idea. Haito13
That's all right, i don't think anyone is sure either. Just asking so that i won't have to fix the model too much when we are sure of how it works. Also i have never worked on a mod like this, you know, exploding body parts. brurpo
I am researching this, and it is a mess for me, first I thought that there was separated parts, but this is not the case, getting the mesh out from the nif skope, all the vertices from arms, and legs are connected, there are no seams, not even in the UV map, where the dismemberment occurs, my second thought then was that it was replacing geometry, but this was negated when I finished my body mod, if there were any other meshes going on, my body would disappear, and a vanilla body would appear. my guess right now, is that there are tagged vertices, and the game create the seam on the fly there, that would explain a lot, because you really cant see any seams in the model where it dismember (except for the head), if it was separated, the edge normals would be 0 degrees there (because it is not connected to anything, its a border) and you would get a sharp edge there ( you can see this where there is actually separated body parts, like the head and the hands). If my guess is right, dismemberment with completely custom meshes (that doesnt match the exact same poly count as the vanilla one) is nearly impossible without modifying the source code. Skree000
beth calls them 'meat caps' ... hope that helps a bit. (the red chopped off slice-views of the limbs)
brurpo
yeh I know they are there, but the meat caps are just to fill the hole on the mesh when you separate 2 parts
