Hitting multiple targets with weapons?

When you swing your sword sideways, it feels awkward that you only hit ONE target in your crosshair and not the other 3 adjacent to the target. Is there a mod that makes you hit multiple targets? This would be fun for both third-person and first-person views.

 

If there are no mods like this, would anyone make one? Would it be hard to make one? If so, what's hard?

The closest you could get would be an area effect enchantment on the weapon, but then it is the enchantment causing damage, and not the weapon. Additionally, you could not make it work with only side to side attacks since there is no way to detect for that specific animation, and even if you could, the detection would occur after the animation had happened simply due to enchantments being triggered after the physical hit has occured.

 

In short, not possible in any practical way close to what you are requesting.
