dunmer_jediknight
hmmm...best work of literature ever? that is a tough one, one of my all time favorites is left hand of darkness by ursula k. le guin, a book that looks at how a socity were that everyone can change their sex with a thought and how such a socity fuctions. Realy cool book :). and then there are the " cliche" LOTR and dune books, lol. but in my opion art of war by sun tzu is a strong contender for best published literature ever, it is over 2000 years old and what it says is still being used today. Only the bible can clame a longer history, but not by much.
Slaiv
I'm sticking with Ender's Game.
UberBender
I like the Ender's Game series although I think Ender's Game is the worst of the four. I liked Xenocide the best.
Darnoc
Hm, I thought about it again, and came up with some new favourites: - The Gilgamesh-Epos (probably the oldest piece of literature still existing)- Beowulf (truly a great saga, as the next two)- Das Niebelungenlied- Edda (the Islandic Saga)- Iliad (Homer's great epos influenced literature until today) Now lets move to the more modern favourites: - Hamlet- War and peace- Les misérables- Le comte de Monte Christo- Homo Faber- Faust- Il nomen de la rosa (probably my personal favourite from these here)- Stein und Flöte - und das ist noch nicht alles. Ein Märchenroman (as I said, this is truly great, but practically unknown) Hm, something philosophical perhaps? - Meditationes de Prima Philosopia (René Descartes)- Kritik der reinen Vernunft (Immanuel Kant; now that was just absolutely genious)- Organon (Aristoteles; the first writing about logic itself)- Politeia (Platon; one of the most important writings of philosophy, conerning politics)- Das Kapital (Karl Marx; this is one of the most influential writings of the last two centuries)
Maquissar
Glad to see someone with "classical" literary taste :) Just like classical music, I don't think that a book should be cast aside only because it hasn't been written in the last 50 years. I haven't read Gilgamesh's epic, nor the Iliad, but Beowulf is a great epic, Snorri's Edda can even be defined as FUN and the Nibelungenlied, although not one of my favourites, is still a very influential epic. To this list I'd add the Odissey, and, since we're discussing classics, I'd also add some of Eurypides's tragedies. As for Il nome della rosa, I don't think it's actually that great. Of course, it's a very well written book and also very interesting, but Eco too often uses it to show off his knowledge about Greek and Latin. Still, it's a classic. The movie with Sean Connery is also good.
DoInK
it's hard to really decide what makes a good book. but for a blaance of information, imagination, emotion and humor, i'd have to throw my support to danielweski's "house of leaves" as well. it's a reading experience that tailors itself to the reader. if house of leaves was a game, it would be completely modable. B) my vote for best graphic novel has to go to alan moore's the watchmen. the art may not be as evolved as some of the more recent novels, put it was a comic that helped revolutionize the industry in such a great way. Art Spiegelman's Maus may have won a pulitzer, but moore won my heart.
UberBender
My vote for best graphic novel is "The Punisher" No, not because I liked the movie (all the new Marvel movies suck phallus), I like ti becuase the "good guy" is a complete psycopath that just goes around shootin people. The new ones have great action scenes, great artwork, and a new story line.(It still attaches to the old one though) It did get a little weird when the Angels wanted him to kill for them (yes, the Heaven kind of angels) but overall the story is quite solid. Two best compilations: MAX's The Punisher: Born MAX's The Punisher: Movie Adaptation I did say that the movies suck but the movie adaptation has the Punisher's debut in "The Amazing Spiderman" and the first issue of the new series. Hayabusa
Graphic Novel - Ok, I`ll be that original: Sandman. ;) seriously, number 1 as far as I can think of one. Book has to be Maestro and Margaret by Bulhakov. Absolutely totally incredibly awesome, on the edge of phantasy. Not an easy one but it`s just great. Some other books I`d recommend at once and for all: The Brave new World by A. Huxley The man in the High Castle by P. K. %&$!
Brighid
Book has to be Maestro and Margaret by Bulhakov. Absolutely totally incredibly awesome, on the edge of phantasy. Not an easy one but it`s just great. I'm reading that one right now. What an incredible trip. Have you read "The Life of Insects" by Nabokov. Another great piece of Russian Literature. Grey-Fox
I'd have to say Heart Of Darkness because its soo compressed and detailed. A bit boring, but soo intricate. And without it, Apocalypse Now would never have come about.
