Siegtorias
Hello there. I've been making progress learning to 3d model. I've now made a gambeson, leather boots, a basic cuirass etc. with similar vertex count to Bethesda (who knew I could top my donut?), but I'm confused as to why every Bethesda asset has tris, or 3 vertex faces, only. I have all quads, would that be a problem or is it okay?
Evangela
This is normal behaviour. Quads are supposed to subdivide into tris for all games.
Siegtorias
So do they do it automatically when I convert it to a nif file, or is that something I do manually? That might explain why Bethesda's assets seem kind of odd. Sorry if it's a dumb question.
Ethreon
"That might explain why Bethesda's assets seem kind of odd" - not quite sure what this means. All beth games (and probably all games - i am not aware of one that doesn't) will turn quads into triangles. This is why you want a good topo, to avoid weird triangles. If you want a specific triangulation you can do it manually, but it's ofc a chore.
Siegtorias
It's probably nothing, just a newb observation at best. So it's not an issue to continue using quads for game assets as long as the topology is good, because it is automatic? Great! I thought my progress was too good to be true and I'd have to somehow remove a vertex from every face or learn a new method. I guess if it's common knowledge that it's done automatically maybe that's why no one answered me in other places. This forum is immensely helpful. Thanks, kudos to both of you! Ethreon
Yea, as long as the quads aren't some weird shape you're fine and don't have to bother doing anything else. Always solve your other ngons though.
Siegtorias
Praise Sheor! I wonder why more people don't do this. Once I figure out texturing, and I hope that's no harder to learn, I'll be able to create everything custom. Too bad I won't be in time to help on Skyblivion, maybe some other project.
