Skyrim Creation Kit crashes?

Sometimes my Creation kit crashes. I'm learning to save more often (lol) but is there a reason?
Once it crashed while I was making a dog duplicate, a few times it's crashed while placing items.

Is it my computer? I have a newer, better computer (the one I use for Creation kit is four years old) but I can't figure out how to push plug ins on the new computer (which is confusing for me cause I figured they'd be the same on both)

Is this just the way of things, or is there a solution?

Thanks all.

Open notepad and add this

[General]
bAllowMultipleMasterLoads=1

[Audio]
bEnableAudio=0

[Grass]
bAllowCreateGrass=1
bAllowLoadGrass=0

[Messages]
bBlockMessageBoxes=1

Then save the file to your Skyrim Special Edition directory, as CreationKitCustom.ini (make sure you put the .ini instead of whatever extension it wants to give. If it's in the right folder, it should be between CreationKit.ini and CreationKitPrefs.ini

This will help reduce the crashing, but nothing can stop the creation kit from crashing altogether. It's just cranky like that. This will make it happen less often, however it comes at a price. When you do try to close the kit, it will hang and you will have to either wait it out or use task manager to kill it. I have become accustomed to just opening the task manager before I even start the CK. The grass portion doesn't really help with the crashing, but it allows some extra grass visibility while building.

These can also be added directly to the CreationKit.ini, but by using a custom, it protects it from being overwritten in the event of a creation kit update. Hope it helps.

How do I find the "Skyrim Special Edition directory"? I went into my steamapps and looked in Skyrim's common folder but can't find it.

bethesda launcher will by default install the creation kit to its own location which will not be the skyrim directory where you would typically install it to, as such if you did not specify where to install it, then it will likely be found in bethesda own directory, look for a bethesda folder, in program files. i am not sure on the location, because by default i always specifiy where everything goes.

but it will likely be found in a folder named bethesda or bethesda.net, in either Program Files or Program Files (x86)

also strongly recommend downloading this: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/20061

fixes many issues with the CK including a very useful feature where all errors are put into a log file, instead of spamming you.

lastly, i recommend moving the 2 ENB DLL files out of you skyrim folder (if applicable), before launching the ck, to prevent crashes caused by the render window. some users have reported this in the past, that the ENB files were causing the CK rendering to crash.

Is this a new thing? I've done a few different installs, each time installed right from the Bethesda launcher, and it went straight into the skyrim special edition directory.

its not a new thing.

when you fresh install the beth.net launcher, it will have its own default path for the ck, which will be the same place that the launcher is installed to, (all programs follow this same logic, and will likewise install any additional programs they might contain to the same place the original program is installed to by default, or whatever the default path the developer set the addiotional programs to install to, typically is it the exact same location the original program is installed to) as such the default location for the ck will be the same location that beth.net launcher is installed to, until you specify location, then from their on out as long as you dont uninstall the beth.net launcher, you can keep uninstalling and reinstalling the ck and it will always go to the path you set, but if you uninstall the beth.net launcher again, and reinstall it, then you will have to set the path again for ck.

in your case you have probably uninstalled and reinstalled the ck multiple times, but never the beth.net launcher. which is why the ck has always installed to the same place you set. however the very first time you installed, beth.net launcher you would of set the ck path to install to the skyrim directory, rather then the same location that beth.net launcher is installed to.

Default location for the Creation Kit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda.net Launcher\games
