How to make an elevator that serves more then 2 floors?

Recommended Posts

Good evening everybody!

I know that there are pack-ins for elevators that go between two floors.

But for a mod that I am working on I need an elevator the can serve 3 floors. (Or more for some other buildings, but 3 for now ...)

How can I do this?

Is there some sort of "premade" solution for this or do I have to write a script for that myself?

And would it be possible to make such an elevator useable by NPCs?

(So that they can move up/down the elevator to get to the different floors. I don't mean companions, they will just "teleport" to you after a while ...)

I am the lord of elevators.

Thou hast summoned me?

Yes!

I thought you posted something a while ago about you working on an elevator system that can go to like 200 floors or something like that ...

Well, the highest building in my mod has "only" 20 floor ....

(But like any "realistic" building, that will have stairs, because you HAVE TO HAVE STAIRS, because one should not use elevators during a fire and all of that ...)

Well, like I said, I am in need of a solution for an elevator that can serve more then 2 floors.

I think I found a solution for the "NPC-Useabillity" of the elevator: Invisible doors that lead to the other floors. The NPCs can use those to get around ...

This one specific building that I need this elevator for does not have enough space for stairs though.

Yes, I could use ladders and "hatches in the floor", but that just looks stupid and how would you move large objects like tables and beds through those while actually "putting the furniture in the building" during it's construction?

(Yes, I always think about "the whole thing", helps to keep things "feeling real"...)

Yup, invisible load doors is the way to go for NPCs.

You can create an indoor cell where these doors lead to, that way you can have them for more than 2 floors. Just have to navmesh the indoor cell properly.

As for the elevator, I will be releasing the system I made as a mod to use in other mods.

Great!

And is there any "planned release date" for that?

I know that it is hard to predict when things like this get done, but are we talking about years or months or weeks or days ...?

Because if it "takes too long", I willl just make up something myself (I can always delete it later and "insert your framework") ...

Like you said, hard to tell. Probably not years.

Ok, good!

In the mean time, I will just make a triggerbox that when the player enters the "elevator cabin" pops up a menu where the player can select what floor to go to.

The scirpt will then teleport the player to an XMarker on the selected floor.

And invisible doors for NPCs.

On a side note:

The top floors of Frank Lloyd Wright's "The Illinois" would have been accessible by Elevator only.

He was extremely confident in the fireproof nature of his building proposal.

Ironically, one of his own homes, Taliesin, suffered multiple fires...

It's not about the acutal fire, it's about the smoke!

Because if there is a fire in the lower levels of the building, the "shaft" of the elevator acts like a chimney and "sucks" all the smoke up.

Not good for those who are inside of the elevator cabin because they are NOT air-tight.

Altough the fire and hot smoke and things like that are also not really good for the plastic insulation of all the electrical systems that are needed for an elevator to operate....

Elevators are great things ....
