Skyrim crashes without error/randomly

Hi  I've recently been having a problem where Skyrim crashes to desktop without any warning or message. I've started a new game 3 times and yet it keeps happening. The only consistent crash I get is when I'm walking near Whiterun. Everytime i get to a certain spot, i crash. It's really frustrating having the game crash on you five minutes in.

I have a bunch of mods and don't know how to tell if they are any conflicting ones or not. Please help? I'm a bit desperate here lol Hours of searching and trying other people's solutoins have failed.

You have several mods that I would consider for seemingly random CTDs. Have you run BOSS and read the log in order to address any messages it gives you?

Also have you checked your computer's CPU and GPU load at the time of the crash?

What are your computer specs?

CTDs can be caused by simply running out of memory. This can be caused by factors external to your game, such as background processes, scheduled tasks, applications etc. The first thing I would do is rule all of that out.

Then I would look at mods that tend to spawn new creatures, etc and/or mods that increase the texture load in various areas. SkyMo, for example is very resource heavy, as is SkyTEST, Lanterns, etc.

If there is a mod you really like, but you find that your CTDs go away without it, you may be able to use it if you reduce your memory load in other areas.

In any case, I would caution that you should read the mods pages very carefully in order to properly remove the mod for testing. Incorrectly removing a mod that uses scripts can result in orphaned scripts, and even more problems than you started with.

That's my advice, anyway. Good luck!

I have 6gb of memory, is that not enough? I never had a problem a problem with my mods before. It wasn't until very recently did Skyrim go apeshit on me lol

Thank you so much for replying. I will try what you suggested and report back :)

I only have 4gb of memory, myself - I noticed I would randomly crash of Skyrim would stop responding much more often on my old save file. I did a complete reinstall and started up a new save the day Dragonborn came out, and I've experienced a much more consistently stable game experience since. For the most part. Point being, your memory should suffice just fine, though it's always a good idea to exit out of as many other background processes as you can prior to playing.

Skyrim, unfortunately, can be a real bastard over time when it comes to modding. Bad scripts, save bloating, seemingly endless load times, random CTDs - these are all issues I experienced with my previous save at around 90 hours in. The more mods you introduce into the game, the more likely it is to come across complications.

Do you have your Papyrus log enabled? You could probably figure out which of your mods (if any) is causing you to crash. I had an issue just recently where I crashed whenever I tried to leave Whiterun through the gate, but I could fast travel out just fine. I stopped playing for a day or two, came back, and the problem had mysteriously sorted itself out. Skyrim's weird like that, sometimes.

Hi,

I'm glad if you already have your answer. Otherwise you can try what I did.

I used to have random shutdown during fast travel, loading saves or on the race menu. This is what eliminated my problems.

First I reinstalled the game and reset my setting to high from ultra.

I skipped using more than one similar mods, say only one facegen, one for hair, one for body. I picked only one of CBBE/UNP/others. Similar goes for companions built from CBBE (if I’m using CBBE)/ UNP (if UNP).

Try not to save during prisoner scenario. Lastly keep track of compatibility of different mods.

I’m new, so apologies if I’m wrong somewhere. Anyway I have more than 60 mods running on Skyrim without any disturbance. Thank you.

~Anvi.

I had the same problem. At first, i thought that was because of the mods. But, guess what, i disabled the "high res pack" and the problem's gone. I've been playing Skyrim without a single crash for the last two weeks. Hope this will be useful.

I've been having crashes between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. in-game here recently, but I thought I had it sorted out. I had read on another thread that the mod Decomposition, which I had, would cause CTDs during waiting, fast traveling, or even just letting time go on to a certain period in the day/night. For these people, it was midnight. Even so, I uninstalled Decomposition and, lo and behold, I could wait! I could sleep! I could fast travel! I could even explore without fear of a morning meltdown...

Until today.

I was coming out of Whiterun after a bottle of mead or two. I just got past the bandit camp on the outskirts of Whiterun (I went around it) when some random High and mighty Elf came out of the grass and started zapping me with lightning and roasting me with fire. I made fairly short work of him once I got close enough to get in a few swings, but continuing on after the battle, I found a spot where the textures were missing on the ground - just the ground. Grass, rocks, flowers, etc. were all fine. I put out my foot to see if it was solid, because the bugged patch was right in the path of my objective and it was too big to go around. I went ahead and checked the time, and decided to wait til 9 when I could see (it was nightime and raining). When I stopped waiting, it was 9:53 in-game. So I continued on across the sea of buggy low-res giant green pixels. But mere moments later, my game crashed - at 10 a.m. in-game.

Long story short, how can I fix these morning crashes? Could the missing texture play a part in the problem? Or could it be my memory (or lack thereof), as I had been playing for a few hours overall?
