Steam already fully implemented their own "console style" UI a few months ago. So making a standardized platform that just uses Steam is really just a matter of semantics and mitigating control schemes.

The REAL question here is if Steam plans to have their console just play the PC versions of games, or if they're going to use their own format that game makers would also have to buy into and develop for. If it's the later, chances are that sales and initial adoption will likely be small until Valve releases HL3 as a Steam Box Exclusive title (if only to make another jab at Microsoft/Halo and troll gamers).

From Steam themselves http://www.computerandvideogames.com/385556/valve-no-current-plans-to-announce-steam-box-in-2013/

They don't seem to be able to make their minds up.

@ Vagrant0 The last I heard it was going to be a controlled PC, whatever that is. I assume it's going to be Linux.

Don't forget Piston, steams concept goal. If I'm not mistaken that's what i think is circulating around

modular pc's

it was no secret

That would be way too expensive for a console. Anyway if it's going to be PC based then why only have one Steambox? they could licence it to other manufacturers with Steam taking royalties. It wouldn't be the first time, the 3DO was made by Panasonic, LG and Sanyo and only failed because of the idiotic price. Steam did say they were talking to various OEMs.

You know its not he final version and not priced by steam officially, its a concept at the moment, you never know what the price will be yet.

even Sony has yet to announce the price of the ps4 yet.

I think e3 is when everything is going to be revealed, even steam box.

Come on, look at it, you'd need to some really fancy custom parts to get that working, they won't come cheap. Anyway these tiny PCs cost a fortune and are weak, they have to be weak because you can't cool them. I would imagine this would be closer to it, maybe a bit smaller if they decide not to include an optical drive http://www.dell.com/uk/p/alienware-x51/pd

You have to keep in mind that hardware, especially hardware direct from a manufacturer, tends to be a fair bit less expensive when you're ordering several thousand units and having the machine assembled within the same country (Usually China). Since most of these machines are purpose built, much of the software (OS, control, and display settings) doesn't need to take into a broad range of hardware specifications (like most other PC software). This is why HP can roll out office desktop computers, including the monitor, for under $300 retail.

A $300-400 retail price for a purpose built gaming box isn't totally infeasible. As far as hardware goes, they really don't need to go much better than PS4's specs since that is probably going to be the industry standard for the next 4-5 years.

One in that form would be, anyway how would you cool it properly?
